Strange, what grief can do to you. Often times you break down and sob. Often you keep a stony face, deleting your emotions. And rarely, but still commonly, you pretend.
The human brain is an amazing thing. I've learned that from sitting through terribly boring lectures at the SHIELD academy, where Fury used to drop me off when I was younger. I was five or six, sitting in the front row of these higher than college level talks about the brain, how it works, and reacts to stimuli.
And from these lectures, I gained a certain respect for the pink pulsating flesh inside my skull. And that respect deepened as I found myself ignoring my father, and what he had done.
However, for me, ignoring my father resulted in me sulking around on the helicarrier while Agents hustled about preparing laboratories, bedrooms, training facilities, and cafeterias.
So I was lost in the rush of incoming agents, sitting in my bedroom, humming a tune and practicing my illusions when I heard the first helicopter arrive. It was Nat and scientist I recognized as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk. However, the big guy was a genius when it came to gama radiation, which was exactly what we needed to trace the tesseract.
The second I spotted Nat I took off sprinting at the assassin, and clung tightly around her waist. "Hey, Hel!" She said, ruffling my hair. I grinned. Maybe this was all I needed to forget my father. Nat, and Clint, Coulson......
I looked around blindly at the other arriving Avengers. I recognized Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, Nat, Bruce Banner, and I had already seen Fury and Coulson. But where was Clint?
"Hey, H, it's time to come inside. We're about to take off." Nat told me, taking my hand and pulling me towards the door leading off of the deck and into the helicarrier. I followed her silently, the missing Avenger still on my mind.
"Nat? Where's Clint?" I asked, tugging on her hand slightly. She have me a sad smile.
"Barton's been compromised."
I almost started crying then and there. My father, the man who had loved and cared for me, had already blown up HQ, and stolen the tesseract, and now he had Clint under his control as well. I groaned, the pit in my stomach growing larger, dreading to meet my father.
I followed the down to the main hangar and sat down in a chair around the large, circular table. The rest of the team piled on around me, talking about astrophysics and gama radiation. I ignored them completely.
"Romanoff, take Dr. Banner to his lab." Fury ordered. The faster we find the tesseract, the better. I stood up and walked with the assassin and scientist, hoping to find some solitary in the laboratories. No such luck, as Tony soon joined us. He greeted me with a hug, ruffled my hair, and sent me off to get done sort of equipment that I didn't understand.
So I left, and ran straight back into my room, and tacking a piece of paper to the wall, I began knife practice, on of my favorite pastimes. I ended up with several nice sized holes in the wall, that would drive Coulson insane.
Ahah.
Maybe it was time for a little mischief to take my mind off of things.
I grinned, and slipped out the door and onto the corridors of the helicarrier.
