Sam turned off the engine and left the car. With the click off a button he locked the doors and made his way down the stone slabbed path to to his parents house. It was late at night, and almost pitch black outside. His eyes had adjusted enough that knew where he was going, and he knew no one could see him.
Taking a deep breath, Sam ducked under the yellow tape and walked forward, into what remained of the house.
Only that morning the building had burnt to the ground.
He took in his surroundings. All the furniture had been destroyed in the fire and what remained were charred walls and a floor littered in ash, broken glass and rubble.
He couldn't help but remember his last visit. Looking around the corridor, he could almost see himself, walking in with his wife and two children. He felt like he was there again, all those weeks ago. He fell into the past, and started to see it all again.
"Sam!, Megan! how are you"
He and his family walked into the warm welcome of his parents home. Mother remarked on how big the children were, giving them a peck on the cheek. His father stood there looking smart, being very formal in his greeting.
"Come into the dining room. Food's all ready"
They stood there only long enough for his family to take off their shoes and coats. Then they were ushered into the dining room, where a table was waiting laden with roast, potatoes, vegetables and more.
They each took a seat, held hands and gave grace. Then it was time to eat. His wife and mother were eager to make his childrens' plates. Him and his father on the other hand dove right into the food. Looking back at it all, it was all so nice. They all talked about plans for the holiday, weddings, birthdays and all sorts of happy outings.
Losing track of time, he saw diner was over and he and his dad walked into the living room as the other cleaned up the dishes. That's when all hell went loose. All seemed fine one moment, then the next he and his dad were yelling at each other at the top of their lungs.
"You watch your mouth!"
"I haven't said nothing!"
"Why I ort to..."
"James!, don't" Mum cried out.
It all ended with him taking his family home. Looking back at it all and the pain he'd caused his parents, the reason for the argument meant nothing to him anymore. He'd hurt his mum and dad, and that made it wrong.
His flashback ended and he returned to the present, standing all alone in a burnt down house.
He tried to imagine a life without his mum and dad. Over the years he and his father had been growing apart. And with this fire.........
"I won't ever make you cry again"Sam whispered, to people who were not there.
Sam left the house and returned to his car. Before staring the engine, he wondered how lucky he was to have his mum and dad. That night Sam paid a little extra attention to stay safe on the road home, to where his family and parents lay safe and asleep in bed.
