It was November 25, 1950 during the Korean War.
When I was young, my parents didn't have enough money to pay for my college, so I had to find a way to balance my life and to make my family proud.
Once the war was about to erupt between the North and South, I saw this as an opportunity. A chance to better my life without college and to give honor to my family. So at age 18, I decided to enter the war. At first, I was hesitant. I wasn't very fit to be a soldier fighting against the North, but 6 months has past and I'm doing okay so far.
However, today was the day I will leave to go to Ch'ongch'on River, due to the sergeant who got a call stating that Chinese PVA Commander, Peng Dehuai, was planning an counteroffensive "second phase" attack on the UN forces including South Korea, Turkey, the UK, and the US.
I was the first man on the list. I didn't make friends, so no one I knew companied me. However, there was a doctor who checked up on me. I didn't really try to interact with him, he seemed nice I guess. But I was nervous, don't get me wrong. I was terrified. Being in war.
When we were about to leave, I saw the same doctor come with us. He made eye contact with me and smiled. "Hey little guy, hurry the fuck up and get in the plane before I throw your petite body in there." I heard the guys behind me laugh as I ignored them and then headed into the plane getting ready for take off.
Almost 200,000 men were stationed by the river. We were close by.
I felt a presence sit next to me in the plane. I looked over to see the doctor.
"Keep that head up high son. You will need it when you fight." He said.
"I just need luck. That's all I'm wishing for." I looked at him.
"I can see it in your eyes, you're terrified." After he said that, I looked back down becoming disappointed with myself.
"But hey, it's okay to be scared. Look at me, I'm about to have a mental breakdown while helping almost 200,000 men who will soon be injured. Everyone is scared, just be brave." His kind words lifted up my confidence a bit. I looked down at the gun in my hands clutching it tightly. I reassured myself that I would do my best.
I heard the captain yell that we arrived. I soon stood up, before heading out I felt a hand on my shoulder, I turn around to see the doctor smiling.
"Don't die today, okay? I believe in you." My heart started to beat harder. The reality hitting me that I may die today. I nodded my head and he let me go.
Right when I took a step out the carrier, the cold winter breeze blew past me. I shivered constantly trying to warm myself up. We were told it was one of the coldest Korean winters in 100 years. We then marched down to the river holding our guns tightly close to our chests. I could see the soldiers who were here, for a couple days, huddled up behind a fort made of snow and dirt.
