A/N: PLEASE READ! Sup folks, thank you for clicking on my story! How are you all? This is my first time really trying to write a multi-chapter fic and my first work for the Hamilton fandom so please bear with me. To start off, I owe a massive thank you to my best friend/editor for first off putting up with my bullshit, I honestly don't know how you do it , and secondly for editing this for me. This would probably be an illegible mess if it wasn't for her. Now this fic is DARK but hopefully with a happy ending. Trigger warnings include: drug and alcohol abuse, addiction, PTSD, child abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, depression, self-harm and suicide. Please don't read this if any of this could be triggering. I'll also put warnings at the beginning of each chapter, but please be careful. This is a Harry Potter AU in case you didn't read the entire description. John is a descendant of  Teddy Lupin and is a metamorphmagus. It will be mainly from John's POV, with some others here and there. That being said, happy reading!

Trigger warning for implied child abuse.

John's POV:

Now I've been going to Hogwarts for the last five years, but the novelty never really wears off. The scarlet train pouring steam onto the platform packed with people, young and old, all piling their way onto the train. It's always easy to spot the first years, staring up at it with awe, some cry as they get on, knowing it will be months until they see their parents again. I don't cry. For me, my time at Hogwarts is freeing. A few months of escape. With good friends, friends who don't care about who I was, or what I do. Just who I am.

The train car has that familiar scent that we grow to love. I shove my trunk into the overhead compartment before flopping into my seat in the corner by the window. Laf sits opposite me, and Herc next to them. Laf's head almost immediately rests on Herc's shoulder, just like every train journey since they got together in our third year. They're happy together, despite their different houses. I can't help but feel a little jealous though, being a third wheel and all.

"John," Laf calls, shaking me from my thoughts. "Are you alright?"

"Hm? I'm fine," I reply, gaze still fixed out the window of the train.

"John. Look at me." I know what they're looking for. I pause for a moment, willing away the black eye and split lip before looking at them.

"I told you I'm fine. See?" Laf shakes their head with a sigh. I know they see right through my bullshit, they always do. They're the one who always knows when I'm lying, or hiding the bruises.

"You don't need to hide, mon ami." Their voice is soft, the French accent soothing to me. "Talk to us, we're your friends. Something's wrong." I know they want me to look at them, but I can't seem to bring myself to look up from my bruised, paint-stained hands, calloused from guitar strings, lonely nights spent on the roof conjuring songs melodies from thin air. Nobody else to hear, just me.

"I'll talk to you later. Not now." I brush it off, with no intention of talking about it later. They will have forgotten all about this by the time we're alone, they always do.

"Alright." They sit back in their seat, concern still etched into their features, but clearly knowing that this will be a losing battle. Herc takes their hand in his with a gentle smile. They're sickeningly adorable together, Laf's sweet smile and the way Herc looks at them like they hung the stars in the sky. Sometimes I long for a relationship like theirs, then I remember I can't. "What did you do over the summer?" Laf asks. I brighten at that, sitting upright in my seat.

"Actually, I've got something to show you guys." I reach into the large front pocket of my hoodie, running my index finger over cool scales as I take the creature in my hand, letting it rest in my palm as I show the others.
