'Cause it's like falling to your knees before a stranger on the street
I did it just the other day

Lorelei stared at the number on her phone for as long as she dared, knowing that for her sister minutes were as precious as any gold could be. When they had been children – playing the games of hide and seek, where only one of them would ever hide – Rory had been able to keep Sera safe. She had managed to shield her little sister every time her father barricaded the doors, leaving her huddling in the corner as he relived his service. It had been simple to protect Sera then, but now Rory didn't know how to save the girl.
The woman took a large breath as she walked through the doors of Serendipity's hospital room, the young blonde looking back at her with slight shock. Being in the hospital had meant that she heard everything that happened – primarily due to the common knowledge that she was Rory's sister – so she had been made aware of the three trauma's that had recently been brought in. It was also clear from the behaviour of the nurses that these cases were severe. So, Sera had anticipated that her sister would remain glued to the ER.
It wasn't until Sera saw the look on her sister's face that it hit her, "I'm not getting a liver, am I?"
"According to all the records I can find, Kathleen Pope no longer exists." Lorelei explained, perching on the edge of Sera's bed and taking her hand in her own. "I even called Bethany; she hadn't heard from her since she left us. She brought a ticket to Denver, and no one has heard from her since."
"And she was the last person we could ask?" Serendipity queried, having dropped her usual playful expression. Watching her sister nod, the young woman muttered, "I got sober, I slipped once and now I'm dying, and no-one can help me."
Rory tightened the grip on her sister's hand, "I'll keep looking for her, and we will do everything we can to get through this."
"Everything except go through this together." Sera sighed, noticing her sister's continued inability to meet her gaze and the unmatching tone of her voice. Anyone would have been fooled by the words leaving Rory's mouth, but Serendipity knew that her sister had perfected the ability to conceal her true feelings with false words. "Because, you still blame me for what happened."
She shook her head, not letting go of the blonde's hand, "I'm trying, Sera. Things changed a lot after Dad died, but I'm trying to be here for you now."
"You've always come first, Rory. You left me to go to college, I was only twelve and you walked away from me." Sera announced, gritting her teeth. "You were the golden child and the one who succeeded against all odds. Do you know what it is like to follow that?"
Rory finally dropped her sister's grip, noticing the venom that the girl carried towards her, "You don't mean that, that is the pain talking."
"The pain wouldn't be talking if you would let them give me the morphine." Serendipity yelled, causing the nurses on the floor to all glance into the room. "I'm an alcoholic, I never had a problem with pain meds. You were the one with a pill problem."
