Smiles Hide Everything

Chapter 1

*Marinette's POV *

I glanced at my watch. 11:53 a.m. 7 minutes until lunch and 3 hours until I can escape school. I wish I could skip school without my parents getting suspicious. I stare at the back of Adrien's head as I think of what I'm going to say to him this afternoon. I was planning on confessing my feelings to him today, but I still haven't found the right words. Alya keeps telling me to 'speak from the heart', but I can't just go up to him and say "Hey Adrien! I have had a crush on you since last year when you gave me that umbrella and I know your schedule down to the exact minute and I have pictures of you all over my walls and under my bed and on my desktop and in my backpack". I might not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I'm not THAT stupid! "-ette! Marinette! Come on, girl! Class ended 5 minutes ago!" said Alya. "S-sorry! I kind of zoned out a little bit." I said, watching Adrien walk out of class.

I gathered my things and went out to find Chloe, who was talking to Adrien. I hid behind a nearby bush so I could hear their conversation.

"Don't go out with Marinette! I'm sooooooo much better than her, so why don't you go out with me?" Chloe said.

"I'm not going out with anyone, Chlo'. I was going to ask out someone else tonight." replied Adrien.

"But, Adrikiiiiiiiins!" Chloe whined.

"My answer is no, Chloe," Adrien said, stiffly.

"W-" At that moment I went up, grabbed Chloe, and dragged her far enough away so that I thought Adrien couldn't hear us. "What are you doing, Chloe? I thought we were friends!" I asked her.

"I-I-I thought it w-would be ok t-to ask Adrien out today." Chloe whimpered.

"But you KNOW that I have a crush on Adrien! How could you betray me like that?!" I shouted.

"I-I-I wasn't thinking and I'm s-"

"SAVE IT!!!!! I don't want to hear another word! Goodbye, Chloe," I shouted, and with that I stormed off, leaving Chloe behind and not looking back. Now that I think about it, I might of been a bit too harsh on Chloe. WAIT, WHAT AM I THINKING?! Chloe completely deserved that after she betrayed me like that! I need to go talk to Alya about all of this. Oh crap! I forgot about my confession to Adrien! I checked my watch. I have 5 minutes to get to the fountain at the park so I can confess! I rush across the street and arrive at the fountain just as Adrien enters the park.

"Hey!" Adrien said.

"H-hi." I internally screamed at myself for stuttering.

"Soooooo, you wanted to tell me something, right?"

"Y-yes. I wanted to tell you that, well, you are the kindest, funniest, and most compassionate person I have ever met. I wanted to tell you that I love you, Adrien Agreste. I don't care if you love Chloe. I love you." I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding in.

"Chloe? Why would I like Chloe? Anyways, I'm sorry Mari, but I can't return your feelings. I, well, I love Ladybug."

All of a sudden, all my hopes and dreams collapsed on top of me and I felt like I was suffocating. "Are you ok, Marinette?" I just realized I was crying and I wiped away my tears but they kept coming. "Y-yes." I said as I ran across the street and ran into one of the girls bathrooms. Fortunately, Alya saw me running and followed me. As I sank down to the floor and started sobbing, Alya came in. "What's wrong, hon? Oh, never mind, let's get you home. You can tell me later, once I get you all taken care of.

* In Marinette's Room*

"Now, why don't you tell me everything that happened?" Alya asked.

"I c-confessed to A-Adrien b-but he said he's in love with me. WAIT, I MEAN LADYBUG!!! He's in love with Ladybug!" I said while flailing my arms around and mentally cursing myself.

"Wait a second! Does this mean what I think it means? Do you just happen to be my number one idol who saves Paris a few times a week? No wonder you're always late to class! Ohmygodohmygodohmgod!!!" screamed Alya.

"Keep it down!" I whisper-yelled.

"I will, just answer the question!" said Alya.

"Don't freak out. but, y-yes, I am." I whispered.

Alya's face turned from shocked to happy to confused.

"Wait, but then why aren't you excited that Adrien is in love with Ladybug?"

"Because Ladybug and I are complete opposites! Ladybug is confident and graceful, while I'm just a clumsy nobody! She's a SUPERHERO, for Pete's sake! I'm nothing compared to her!" I shouted.

"Girl, you are EVERYTHING compared to her! You are smart, funny, talented, beautiful, and so much more! Ladybug is just a mask you put on so people don't know it's you!"

"Thanks for the encouragement, Alya! I'd like to spend a few minutes alone now though."

"Ok, bye girl!"

"Bye, Alya." I slumped against my desk as soon as Alya left. "Did I do the right thing, Tikki?" I asked. "Yes, of course you did, Marinette! You almost always make the right decisions! Great job!" Tikki said. "Well, thank you Tikki." I was very grateful to have a kwami like Tikki around all the time.
