After almost two months of not seeing Ryan, Heather had successfully moved on. She had been accepted into Gilbert after receiving a letter two weeks after it was sent, she had sat more of her exams and felt happy with her family.
It was a Sunday dinner and it the weather in Fortland was at a peak, the sun was beating down and it was only getting hotter as the day went on. Graham and Fiona hauled the old barbecue out of the basement while people from Graham's band days showed up as well as random friends and members of the family.
Cameron and Heather were sitting at the bottom of the garden, watching everything happen.
"So, you don't miss him at all?" asked Cameron, turning his head to Heather.
"Nope, as you said before, two types of people in this world and they are so much happier without a relationship...In high school anyway," smiled Heather, watching Graham jam with his old band while Fiona and a few friends cheered.
As the sun began to set and the heat kept rising, Ryan and his band appeared in the back garden with everyone else. Nobody had a problem with them being there and Heather wasn't going to start a scene since they fitted in quite well with Graham's band, instead, Heather and Cameron stayed where they were at the bottom of the garden.
"Here he is, let the awkward kick in," sneered Cameron, turning his head away from Heather as Ryan approached them.
"Heather, can we talk?" asked Ryan, raising his eyebrow at Cameron.
"I'll leave you two alone," sighed Cameron as he stood up and began walking away.
"So, how have you been?" asked Ryan, as Cameron "accidentally" bumped his shoulder against Ryan's.
"What do you want?" asked Heather, standing up.
"Us to be friends," said Ryan, breathing quickly.
"Why?" asked Heather, "I mean I lived for seventeen years, perfectly happy, before I met you. I'm pretty sure I can keep going that way,"
"I dunno how I lived before, these past few months have been horrible! I can't eat, I can't sleep," moaned Ryan, watching Heather walk past him.
"Oh, Ryan," said Heather, in a soothing voice, "Oh wait, I don't care,"
"Heather, please," begged Ryan, following her.
"Look, we had this perfect time together but you were right, it's not going to work with the two of us going to different places," said Heather, turning to face him.
"...So you were accepted into Gilbert?" asked Ryan, biting his lip.
"Yeah, I was. Cameron is going to a school not far from Gilbert so I won't be alone," sighed Heather, turning to walk away again.
"WE HAVE FIRE!" yelled Graham, lighting a bonfire that everyone had contributed to while Ryan and Heather had their talk.
"Now, you can either stay and enjoy yourself with your band and jam with my dad...Or you can leave," said Heather, approaching Cameron, who was talking to one of Heather's cousins.
Ryan nodded as he walked over to his band and sat next to them.
"What did he want?" asked Cameron, watching Ryan look back at them.
"It doesn't matter," smiled Heather, feeling the heat from the night and the bonfire hit her back.
"There are so many people here, some of them are related to you and some aren't...It's actually impossible to count," rambled Cameron as Fiona came out the house carrying Graham's old guitar.
"GUYS, EVERYONE AROUND THE FIRE! PINE BAY AND PUSS-CUTS ARE GONNA JAM," yelled Fiona as the two bands became one.
Most of the people at the fire fell silent as the band set up, Cameron and Heather wandered away from the fire and stood and watched.
"What if, like, Ryan brings out this epic love song about how much he sucks and that you're the only light he's ever known and then you-"
Cameron was cut off by Ryan who started to shout so everyone could hear, "THIS ONE, IS FOR HEATHER. THE LOVE OF MY LIFE,"
Heather felt her face go red as everyone turned to look at her and coo over them.
Pine Bay and Puss-Cuts began playing the instrumental to, 'Real Love' by Tom O'Dell while everyone started clapping in rhythem or waving their phone screens like you do at concerts during slow songs.
Fiona came over to Heather and pulled her towards Ryan just as the song hit it's peak.
The band kept playing but toned the volume down a little as Ryan turned to Heather. Everyone had their attention drawn to something else which gave Ryan the opportunity to do this.
"Heather, just listen...Stay," said Ryan, his voice started breaking before he swallowed the emotion back, "There's no words that can ever apologize for what happened to us, I was a dick but there is a good side to it, I hope. Heather, I will do anything if you stay with me. I'll quit the band, cancel the record deal, I'll move to Glasston for you, I'll do anything...Just...Stay,"
Ryan finally caved in as he said the final few words, his voice broke and the tears rushed from his eyes like an avalanche.
"Ryan..." cooed Heather, taking his hand and talking in a light tone, "You know I can't. I'm not gonna force you to stop doing what you love and cancel your entire life for me, I'm sorry. I love you but...I can't,"
Heather dropped Ryan's hand before going on her tip toes and whispering into his ear, "I never said goodbye though,"
Heather gently kissed Ryan's temple before stepping away from him and heading over to Cameron, Graham and Fiona.
Ryan watched as Heather laughed and smiled with her family. Even if Cameron wasn't blood, he stood for a brother, something Ryan wouldn't ever be able to stand for. They looked happy...She looked happy, without him.
She was right, they would be going in two different directons, meeting different people.
She was right to leave.
She was right.
