I was awoken by my body being shook. I opened my eyes, and groggily looked at the scene in front of me. A boy was in front of me, shaking me by the shoulders.I quickly sat up, cheeks a rosy red. He smiled, he actually looked somewhat relieved. I sent him a questioning look.
I sat up fully and got an actual good look at him. He had on a school-boy's uniform and tall socks. He had dark brown hair and warm brown skin. On the inside of his wrist, there was an umbrella tattoo.
I knew who this boy was. I scrambled to my feet and backed up into a pile of hot, steamy, trash.
"No, no, no.. What is this? A dream?" I murmured to myself. The boy gave me a quizzical look. Then it seemed realization struck his face.
"Hey, uh, I'm Five-"
I cut him off, knowing exactly who he was. "I know you are. I know you?" The last part seemed more like a question rather than a statement.
"This is a dream, or a mass hallucination. Am I crazy?" I started rambling like I do when I'm nervous. He stopped me.
"How do you know me?" He asked, in utter confusion.
"You're in that comic book. The boy who can jump through space and time, you're 'The Boy' or Number Five." He gasped at that.
"What? What comic? That can't be possible." I thought about it for a second, and realized I had the comic still in my bag. I looked around, my bag not in sight.
"No, no, no. Where is it?" I walked around in circles, the boy Five looked at me like I had just grown another head.
"What exactly are you looking for?" He asked, following my figure walk in circles.
"My bag, wonder boy!" I exclaimed. He shot me a glare at that nickname.
"Oh, this one?" He asked, holding up my bag with all my superhero pins with Tobey Mcguire and all the comic heroes.I scoffed and nodded. He handed it to me and I rummaged through it, pulled out my comic book and shoved it into his hands. He took it and looked at the cover.
He flipped through the pages thoughtfully, stuck out his tongue, and rubbed his chin before handing back my comic.
"See?" I said "Do you believe me now?" He didn't answer me, just walked past me and rummaged through a wagon. He grabbed a napkin and an almost empty pen and started to scribble down complex equations that I bet even a college math graduate could understand, let alone a snarky, thirteen year old boy.
He did this for several minutes until, suddenly he stopped, gears clicking into place.
"You're from an alternate universe." He scoffed.
"Uhh.. What? I must have heard you wrong, I thought you said I'm from an alter-" He cut me off.
"I did say that. Well, it's more like you were in an alternate universe, and lived there for most your life, but were probably originally born here because you obviously don't remember going to an alternate universe, and usually one would remember that sort of thing." Five said.
He went back to his work. Him and I stood for a few minutes in complete silence, other than the constant writing sound of the pen scratching the cheap napkin.
"Y/N." I said, realizing I had never even told him my name. He glanced up with a quizzical look.
"What?" He asked, confused on what my point was.
"My name. You never asked, and I never said it. Y/N L/N." I repeated.
"Oh," He said, I played with the chain around my neck, like when I do when I'm nervous.
And that's how it was for awhile, Five expecting me to understand that there's probably no way of me getting home, and I was apparently in an alternate universe. And he expected me to swallow that along with the fact that we were literally living in an apocalypse.
