Five and I became quite good friends over the past seven years in this universe, all things considered. After he came back, something clicked into place. We became a lot closer since Five left, and he comforted me when I had all my breakdowns about never being able to find my family again, and I did the same for him.He told me about all his childhood memories and I did the same in turn. We talked about anything and everything. He told me about how he found a prosthetic eye on one of the dead people, and how it would stop the end of the world if he could find it’s owner once he got back to the present.
“Y/N!” His voice snapped me back into reality.
“Oh, sorry Five, I was in my own little world.” I giggled a little at that. “What do you need?” I proceeded to ask.
“I need you to look at my equations, see if they make any sense to you. Delores keeps saying they’re off.” He glared at the mannequin. I looked at him, utterly confused. Why did he want me to look at his equations, and although he taught me a lot about math over the years, I was nowhere near as advanced as him.
“Are you sure I’m fit for the job? Why don’t you ask Delores to do it? You know I’m no genius at math.” He thought about this for a moment, but still handed you the notebook.
“Yes, I’m sure.” I just shrugged and took the book.
The equations were surprisingly neat and easy to read and understand. For several minutes I looked over each page, carefully reading each sentence until I reached the end. He looked at me curiously, I told him one of the equations that I thought didn’t really make sense. He looked at it and groaned.
“Of course it was this one! How could I be so stupid!” He started furiously rewriting multiple equations, I took the hint and went back to sifting through trash.
On one day about ten years later, it finally hit me; I wasn’t going home any time soon. So, I decided I would tell Five the thing I had never told anyone before. I figured since I’d known Five longer than anyone else in my life.
We were over by a river away from the city to get our week’s amount of water. I liked doing this, the air was as fresh as it could be and didn’t reek of the dead. The water was obviously polluted, but Five made a sort of filtration system. My skin would get really dry if I didn’t swim or go underwater every so often, and so whenever we went and got water, I went into the water. Both of you actually went into the water, Five for the reason of getting the stench of the world off of him, and assumed I did it for the same reason.
You had arrived at the river and started filling up the buckets you brought for the water, you had also brought your other clothes that I had found over the years to wash in the river with the bottle of detergent I had found in a dilapidated version of a store that looked like was once maybe a Walmart.
I was so nervous about this I was shaking. I wanted to tell someone before I died, so why not Five? I have known him for years now, so what was the big deal? The worst thing that could happen is--well, he could run away screaming and then I would have no friends, and he would have Delores, and something told me he could survive just fine on his own.
“What’s wrong?” Five asked, I realized I had been standing there and staring at him, still shaking. Five had his shirt off, and was already wading through the water.
“Oh, jeez sorry I wasn’t trying to stare.” I said, cheeks warm. Me and Five were both almost thirty, and I hadn’t realized how different he looked since way back when Five and I had met. Five’s jawline had become more defined, his hair was down to his shoulders and was sloppily cut with a switchblade that was in my bag. His shoulders were more broad and more muscular, he even had a little stubble growing.
“What’s wrong?” He repeated. I realized I was still shaking, and my fists were clenched, knuckles white. I wasn’t exactly sure if I still wanted to tell Five about my whole fish thing. I sighed and threw up my hands in exasperation.
“Fine! I’ll tell you” I said it more to myself rather than to him. I motioned him to come over, and once he did, I took off my shirt and stopped the mist.
He immediately turned around, but when I turned around to show my back, he looked again. The scales ran up my spine and branched out over my shoulders. Five gasped and reached out his hand to touch the scales, but stopped short. I had my head turned around to look at him, and gave him a nod to go ahead and touch the scales. He gingerly touched my shoulder blade, and slowly set his hand on my back.
I turned around and put my shirt back on. He stared at my neck, eyes wide, mouth slightly agape. I was about to make a sarcastic remark, but realized why he was staring.
“Oh, yeah, those.” I smiled slightly. “I, uh, have gills and scales.” I felt my heart hammering in my chest.
“How did I not see them before?” Five asked, still in complete shock.
“I hide them through a sort of shield, I don’t know how I fgured out how to do it, but I just say a specific set of words and the shield covers it. I know I should have shown you before, I know, but I’ve never shown anyone before and I don’t know I guess I was scared and-” I was rambling again.
“Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay.” He grabbed my shoulders “I just wish you had told me sooner because this might be able to help get eachother home.” I nodded.
