WHEN SATOMI WAS but a child everything was at once so peaceful. The gentle cold winds rolling from the hills of the north clouded against her tanned cheeks, causing a scarlet flush that struck out so much against the blinding white of the snow that stretched for miles and miles, befalling on the prosperous Southern Water Tribe. A time where she bask under the comfort her tribe and learn lessons from crafts work to why the moon pulled the tides, a sense of deep connection blooming within her small heart. Days where she felt as she could run for hours and hours and never stop, not even when her parents beckoned her back inside their home could the feeling of splendid freedom only a pace away vanish.
But nothing good ever last forever. The tides grew violent and the winds of the north became ruthless in their bitter assault, at the age of seven she never would have guessed that the spirits were delivering her a sign that she was all too late to realize. Memories that appear in pain riddled flashes where the only connection she had to that faithful day her mother was taken from her forever. Satomi had been filled with a coursing anguish that, like a fire, burned her alight, setting her soul ablaze and torching the seams until nothing was left.
Satomi had never been touched by fire, eyes the color of the crashing waves peering at the vibrant illumination and feeling the warmth it provided. She would truly know what it was like to burn when alabaster turned to onyx as coal rained down on the docile village, plunging it into a storm of darkness. As a child, you never truly understand the perils of war until it makes its prescence known within the once calm atmosphere of your home. Even then, you don't full understand the complexities of it.
All you know is pain. Pain as Satomi watched her tribe's men adorned in their dark blue and leather padded armour, weapons brashing the furiousity of wolves against the enemy. An enemy that stuck out against the snow in their black like oil guards and faces etched with cruel expressions. But that's not what scares her, like so many. No, what scares her is the fire they bare from within. Fire- agile in strike, but biting all the same as it cut down through everything Satomi had ever known, tearing it down until there was nothing left.
It was then that Satomi truly understood what it was like to burn. And that understanding would only continue to grow as she from the clutches of her father's unrelenting grip as people like them, blessed with an understanding art sacred to their ancestors to direct the flow of the water around them, where casted away on to the enemies ships, never to be seen again. As the only guiding light she had left in her life vanishes into the night without a trace, leaving her to synthesize enemy forces returning to take the last bit of light she held in her life than a cold reality.
