i sigh contently as i fold the letter and put it inside of an envelope. i start melting my gold wax, pouring it onto the envelope, then stamping it closed. i doodle small flowers on the outside, then finally sign the front.

alexander hamilton

i place my newest letter in the teal box and close it securely. i put it back on the top shelf, covering it with my shoe boxes so it's hidden once again.

"another letter? seriously? who's it for this time?" peggy asks.

"alexander hamilton. if you must know." i reply, falling onto my bed.

"you know, the sister in me should be yelling at you, but the best friend in me should also be yelling at you." she scolds.

alexander is the star debate student at our school. he reads behind that tree in the courtyard and pretends to be friends with the assholes so he's accepted by society. what's the most important detail? he's dating peggy's sister; eliza.

we used to be good friends and talk constantly. then, he got together with eliza and things changed. he tried his best to continue including me, but it just ended with me awkwardly third wheeling. maybe it was for the best because eliza was starting to get annoyed of me anyways.

i try to think of an argument, but she's right. alexander currently holds the record of my longest crush. it's been almost a century and he's still being used in my fantasies that help me sleep. he also holds the record of how quick it took me to write a letter.

i write a letter when i have a crush so intense i don't know what else to do. there are five letters in total; alexander hamilton, thomas jefferson, arthur middleton, francis kinloch, and marquis de lafayette.

thomas jefferson was a childhood friend. you know that kid every girl had a crush on just because he was the fastest? that was thomas jefferson. he shared his orange slices and i fell hard.

then there was arthur middleton from camp. it was a classic summer sleep away camp. it was a perfect opportunity for parents to send their kids away for a week and my dad took full advantage of it. at the end of the camp, there was a field day and we were partners. when we won, he kissed me on my cheek and i couldn't stop thinking about him for months.

next was francis kinloch. i don't really know why i fell for him. maybe it was because he shared the same interest in frogs as i did with turtles. maybe it was because i was the only one he would talk to when the class had to dissect frogs. or maybe, just maybe, it was because he was the one person who couldn't see my faults, no matter how hard i pointed them out to him.

finally there was marquis de lafayette. in all honesty, i think i fell in love with his french accent. the way he stumbled over words in english and sometimes switched from french to english then back to french while talking. but whatever he did, he somehow managed to get a letter.

"i know, i know, but it's not like i would try something anyways. even though your sister hates my guts, i don't hate her." i say, pushing a random pile of clothes off my bed. it just adds to the mountains of clothes and other miscellaneous things i have, but i'll clean it someday.

"b t dubs, eliza is bringing alex over for dinner tonight..." peggy casually reminds me.

"seriously? why?" i turn over on my side to face her. eliza is going through that weird phase where you pick up on everyone's personality and slowly find yourself copying bits and pieces to create your own. i think she's trying to be half peggy and half angelica, even though it's not really working.
