Potions Classroom
"Can anyone tell me what this potion is?" Slughorn asked the class.
I raised my hand but of course he picks Hermione Granger. I despised her. She was always every teacher's favorite, no matter how hard I tried. I was very gifted in potions and DADA but somehow she was always first in everything. Especially with Snape no longer teaching potions, I had no upper hand.
"That is Veritaserum, Professor." She says in a matter-of-fact way.
"Ugh, she is the worst." I whisper to Pansy and Draco.
"You're a better potions master than she'll ever be, Rose. You don't need that old baboon to kiss your ass." Draco says, quietly squeezing my hand gently.
I give him a small smile before turning my attention back to the lesson.
"Does anyone know what this potion is?" Professor Slughorn asks stirring the pot gently.
I shot my hand up immediately as well as Hermione. Luckily he chose me this time.
"Miss Hale?"
"That is Amortentia, the most powerful love potion. It's said to smell differently for everyone, according to what attracts them." I say.
"Very good, Miss Hale. Would you mind telling us what you smell?"
"I smell mint toothpaste, hints of citrus, firewood, and a slight scent of a subtle cologne I can't quite place." I say quietly.
I knew whose cologne it was but was too scared I would give myself away.
"What about you, Mr. Malfoy?" Slughorn asks.
He steps closer to the potion and inhales for a few seconds.
"I smell roses, chai tea, and pine." He says nonchalantly.
It was probably just a coincidence that I wore a perfume that smelled of rose and woods. Or the fact I loved chai tea.
He was my best friend for Godric's Sake. He probably didn't even think of me that way. We grew up together since we were babies.
I look over to see Pansy glaring at us both. It seemed she had picked up on Draco's scent as well.
"Sorry that we're late professor. We overslept." Harry Potter says rushing in the classroom with Ron Weasley trailing behind him, as usual.
"No harm. Try to be on time from now on." Slughorn states.
Draco scoffs in disgust. We all knew if it was anyone but the Golden boy, the reaction would be much different.
"Today we will be brewing Draught of Living Death. Open your books to page 207 and gather your materials and ingredients. Whoever brews it the best gets this vial of Liquid Luck. Good luck." He says before everyone rushes to the cabinet for ingredients.
Luckily for me, my father excelled at potions and taught my siblings and I to brew Draught of Living Death many times. The Liquid Luck will be mine.
I was almost finished with my brew when I looked around to see most of the other students struggling. Except Golden Boy himself. He was walking over to Slughorn.
There was absolutely no way he beat me at finishing. If he did, it must be wrong. I was by far superior in potions. Potter, on the other hand, barely passed his OWLS last year in potions. I grit my teeth and drop a leaf in my potion. Sure enough, it was perfectly disintegrated. I started walking over to Slughorn when I heard the words that stopped me in my tracks.
"Well done Mr. Potter! This is the best Draught I've seen a student ever prepare since Snape himself. Here you go, one vial of Liquid Luck. Congratulations." Slughorn said handing him the vial.
