I offer to take Elizabeth to the grave. I grab Jaime's car keys and we drive in silence. It only takes a few minutes and I take her hand as we walk through the headstones to their final resting place. I explain how the guys bought the headstone when I was pregnant and still paying off the funeral costs and how much I loved her son and grandson and missed them every day. She grabs hold of my hand.
"I should never have said what I did. Owen will never know how sorry I am for how I acted. I see now that if he was still here, you would still be together. It's just at the time I thought you were both too young. Can you forgive me?"
I nod. She's right. If Owen was here I have no doubt we would be together. That was why we married in the first place. We knew.
"Elizabeth, how did you know where we were?" I ask. That question has had me baffled for the last couple of hours.
"Owen wrote to me when you first came out here. It was a while ago I know but I kept the letter and just hoped I'd find you. I visited your old address first and your old landlord knew your new address from forwarding on your mail. I just wish I'd known sooner."
"I did write to you after I couldn't get through on the phone though. I wrote more than once and thought you still hated me and that's why you didn't reply" I say, a tear falling from my eye.
"I never hated you Cate. I loved you as a daughter. I don't know what happened to the letters. Post goes missing sometimes. That's all I can think of."
We both stand and head back to the car.
"Where are you staying?" I ask.
"Well, I was hoping you could recommend somewhere really" she says.
"How about with us. You can get to know Anwen a bit better. I'm sure Jaime won't mind. You are her grandmother after all."
She pulls me into a hug.
"Thank you Catey. You have no idea what this means to me."
