Summer was creeping over the grounds of the castle, but the excitement that filled the summer air in first year was no where to be felt, instead an atmosphere of fear engulfed the castle. There was no Hagrid visible from the windows, striding the grounds with a smile and Fang by his heels. Me, Harry and Ron kept trying to get Madam Pomfrey to allow us to visit Hermione but to no avail.
I did get to visit Hermione on my own, after dark, when I stole Harry's invisibility cloak, but he doesn't have to know about that. I just sat there holding her hand, and I don't know if she could hear me, but I just made sure to tell her how much she meant to me. I didn't mention the part where I might have a slight crush on her, in case she could hear me, and due to the fact that I wasn't completely sure how strong these feelings were.
With Dumbledore gone, nobody in the castle felt safe, there was barely a face to be seen in the school that didn't look worried. Harry kept repeating to himself Dumbledore's final words before making his leave, "I will only have truly left this school when there is none here loyal to me... help will always be given to those who ask for it." But what good were these words?
I had my mind on Hagrids hint about the spiders, it was far more straight forward than whatever Dumbledore said, there was a slight problem, I couldn't find a single damn spider, but I was determined, if it meant getting Hermione back.
It was hard to look for spiders when we were not allowed to wander the castle on our own, but we tried our hardest. Draco seemed to thoroughly enjoy the feeling terror and suspicion that filled almost every students heart. He would strut around the castle like he had just won the lottery or had been appointed head boy. I was seriously considering punching him in the face again.
One day, during potions, me, Harry and Ron overheard him gloating about Dumbledore's removal from the school.
"I always thought Father might be the one to rid this school of Dumbledore!" He said, making no effort to keep his voice down. "I told you he thinks Dumbledore is the worst headmaster the school has ever seen. Maybe we'll get a decent one now. Someone who won't want the Chamber of Secrets closed. McGonagall won't last long, she's only filling in..."
Snape swept passed us, making no comment about Hermiones empty seat.
"Sir," Malfoy said loudley, "Sir, why don't you apply for the Headmaster job?"
"Now, now, Malfoy," said Snape, barely able to supress a rare smirk, "Professor Dumbledore has only been suspended, I dare say he'll be back within a few weeks."
"Yeah, right." Said Malfoy smirking. "I expect you'd have fathers vote, sir, if you wanted to apply for the job. I'll tell him you're the best teacher in the school."
"Oh just propose to him already Malfoy!" I shouted standing up, losing control.
"Shut your mouth L/n!" He spat back as all eyes fell on us
"Mr L/n, I suggest you take your seat, unless you want another detention." Snape said as his lip curled. I reluctantly sat back down and continued my work. Snape smirked as he strode back to his desk.
"I'm quite surprised the mudbloods haven't all packed their bags and left yet." Malfoy continued. I was so close to snapping and just punching his ugly mug. "Bet you five galleons the next one dies, pity it wasn't Granger."
The bell rang at that point as Harry and Ron looked at me nervously, Dean attempted to grab me as I pushed towards Malfoy, but he couldn't hold me. The second I got in reach of Malfoy, I launched my fist into his nose, causing a loud crunching noise, and a small splatter of blood.
His friends just stared at me as the noise of people packing and talking drowned out his cries of pain. I crouched down beside him and handed him a tissue from my pocket to wipe the blood away.
