Hidden in the shadows of the doorway, he waited for her to come back home to him. The mask was a nuisance but necessary. She might not be alone. With his index finger, he scratched at the edge of the mask, momentarily restricting his vision to a dark pinprick of space; then he shifted it back, pupils widening at the change in light. He laid his fingers in his left pocket, lightly stroking the metal rings he found there. Later, sweetheart, he thought to himself, chuckling. Two for the price of one; one word that is. They don't fit, you say? Why I'll be happy to adjust them. Inside his pocket, he wrapped his fingers around the rings, ratcheting them shut inch by inch, each click bringing a new grin to his cheeks as he pictured her wrists inside the rings, pictured the look in her eyes when she realized that this time she wasn't going to get away. Pictured the smile on her face when she realized she didn't want to. The sound of a car pulling up to the curb broke his reverie. Melting back to silence, he stood in the shadows, his wait about to end.
