Sebastian and Clarissa broke up. Sebastian trusted her and told her about his troubles, about his sister's attempt at suicide. She told him Sophie was a Drama Queen and Attention seeker. It ended there. Of course, Mrs. Coleman was very devastated by the news, she blamed Sophie for the loss of Clarissa from their lives. Nevertheless, the twins were starting off senior year & Sebastian vowed to make this the best year of her life.
For some unknown reason, Sebastian felt at fault for his sister's deterioration in mental health, he had taken his eye off the ball. His saying was that he'll always take care of his precious light, but he hadn't lived up to that promise for a year now. And so once again he devoted his life to making her feel better and safer, sacrificing his own happiness for hers. His first act was to get Jared out of Sophie's life, seeing as he got a job with his sister at the cafe and still came to hangout with Sophie. They still had their 'smoke and chats' in his car.
During the first week of senior year, Sebastian approached Jared next to the cafe and told him to break off his deal with Sophie, and to stop supplying her. Were it any other client, Jared would have backed off immediately, he didn't need the trouble. But Sophie wasn't just a client to him, they were friends, and they had a special connection. Jared, just like Sebastian, felt the need to always to care of Sophie. So, when Sebastian came to Jared again 3 weeks later, Jared verbalized his thoughts and told him how he felt about his sister. But Sebastian wouldn't listen to him. In Sebastian's eyes, Jared was no more than a low life, drug dealer, who was dragging his sister toward the darker side. He thought Jared would do or say anything to not lose a customer. But nothing changed, and Sebastian didn't want to risk Sophie finding out about his attempts at distancing Jared, fearing she'd go through with the threat of ending her life. There was only one thing he knew would keep Jared away for good.
On the last day before winter break, which happened to be a Friday, Sophie waited by the door for Jared to come and meet her. She waited for almost half an hour, and decided maybe he was already at his car waiting for her. Once she stepped out onto the parking lot, there was a commotion. Sophie pushed her way through a crowd whispering about how it was gonna happen eventually and speculations why he stayed so near school after all this time. She finally got to the center of it, only to see Jared being pushed against a cop car and cuffs getting slipped on to his hands. A different cop was confiscating Jarred's different drugs from his hiding spots in the car. Sophie was in shock. This wasn't supposed to happen, not just out of the blue. She wanted to get to Jared, to just be there for him, because thats what they do, that's what their friendship was. They were there for each other.
When Sophie started moving towards him, a hand had stopped her, and held her in place. She turned around in anger to see who it was and saw Sebastian's solemn face and then everything clicked. Sebastian called the cops, they wouldn't come here randomly and start searching Jared's car. They had to be tipped off. By Sebastian. After that Sophie remembers yelling at Sebastian, telling him he's the worst brother ever. These were harsh words on Sebastian seeing as he loved his sister, and everything he did was solely for her own good.
"You only did this because you don't want me to be happy. You just want me to be miserable all the time so that I would need you. I don't need you anymore. I don't need you to protect me or stay with me. I just want you to leave me alone. Go and be happy with your pretty girlfriend, and your perfect parents who love you." Sophie had yelled in the midst of the crowd and then stormed off. She didn't know were she was headed to, she could barely even see in front of her. She vaguely heard Sebastian coming after her, pleading with her. She remembered stopping in the middle of the road and then all went blank.
When Sophie came back to reality she was sleeping in a chair in a white room. Her whole left arm throbbed with pain and she could see her mother crying just outside the room. Then she looked around the room. There was a bed in the middle and Sebastian was sleeping in it. His head was bandaged and his right leg was in a cast. He had multiple cuts and bruises all over his body. Before Sophie was able to come up with a scenario with what could have happened, her father stormed in, with her mother hot in his trail.
"I don't even want to stay in this crazy family. It's what I get for marrying the lunatic. You know I was warned that you weren't stable, that you played all nice then went to the looney bin in no time. But I didn't listen, and what a fool I was!" He took his briefcase thrown on the chair, "From the beginning I told you I won't be raising any crazy children, you should just forget that I was ever in your life. I'm going to get a better life for myself." He took one last spiteful look at Sophie then left forever.
Sophie's mother was still crying, she went to sit next to a now awake Sebastian. "Honey, do you feel ok? Omg this never should have happened to you. My precious son, I'm so sorry, we should've taken that crazy girl to an institute a long time ago, it's all my fault, I should've taken care of my precious boy instead of this crazy girl who I can't even call my daughter" But then Sebastian cut her off, " Mom, don't put this on Sophie, I was crossing the street and I didn't see the car coming ok? Sophie had nothing to do with it" Sebastian stated, looking mostly at Sophie as he delivered his speech.
"But Sebastian there were witnesses, everyone saw what happened, she was there, it's all her fau-"
"Sophie had nothing to do with it. End of discussion mother."

"So are you going to tell me what happened or are you waiting for me to ask?" The doctor asked amused. Although nothing seemed amusing about my story.
"You know doc, for a psychiatrist you sure do fail in the compassion department." I told him but proceeded to tell him the story nonetheless. "Sophie blacked out not because she was hit by the truck, but as you may have deducted, because her brother went in to save her and she walked away in the last second to let him take the hit"
"Why do you think she did that? Her brother had been with her all her life, he was the one constant, through all the people she tried to love over the years. And she sacrificed him"
"For Jared. Because he was the one person who understood. Sebastian was with her, yes, but he never understood, he'd always been the golden child. He couldn't possibly understand her pain"
"And Jared did. What kind of pain is this?" The doctor knew the point he wanted to get to and he wasn't to stop questioning till he got her to say it out loud.
"Daddy issues"
