On their 20th birthday, Sebastian finally managed to get on his feet and found a suitable apartment, after working whatever job he could to get the money. Sophie didn't mind staying at the house alone for almost 2 years. She had a steady job working at the cafe with Jeanine, Jared's sister, but Sebastian didn't know that. He did know about her helping out at the library whenever she could. Which also was a benefit for Sophie, since she loved diving into different worlds everyday. Sophie had even considered staying here for good and not going to live with her brother. Part of it was because she didn't want to leave the house. This was the only house that she actually got a chance to grow a connection to. It didn't exactly hold great memories, but it was a house with memories nonetheless. She also hoped that one day her parents would come back. Sophie often chastised herself for thinking this way and had to remind herself that a home is with people, and Sebastian was her only person.
Sebastian came back a week before they were to leave to help Sophie pack, and so they could celebrate their 20th together. They went out for ice cream and hung out around town. Sophie was convinced now that she'd be leaving because she missed her brother very much. Right outside their old high school, where they went to watch a football game, they ran into a familiar face.
"It's been some time, Soph" Jared said as he opened his arms wide as Sophie ran to him. He had just been released from jail, and was with his sister at the cafe when he saw Sophie and Sebastian emerge from the high school. He too had missed his best friend.
As Sophie stood embracing Jared, all the memories of how we was imprisoned came back, everything that ever had to do with him and Sebastian. It all came rushing back, a surge of emotions. Sophie turned towards Sebastian, very angry and this time it was her intention to push her brother into the middle of the road. She was so angry with him, and she just wanted to let it all out. And so Sophie moved towards Sebastian as a car came speeding down the road. This was her moment. She could achieve what she failed to do 2 years ago. Jared saw the look on her face, he understood what was going on beneath it all. And he was going to stop it from happening. In a moment Sophie was close to pushing Sebastian onto the road, when Jared got a grip on her. Sophie pushed Jared off of her and he fell onto the road. Everything was a blur for Sophie. The car screeched to a stop. People were screaming. Sebastian ran onto the road. Someone had called an ambulance because there were sirens heard from a distance. Some other person was yelling and saying he couldn't find a pulse. Sophie stood and watched. Her dad was right. It took 20 years for his theory to become true, but in the end Sophie was truly responsible for the death of another human being.

I sat in silence waiting for the doctor to make his comment. We were at the end of my story and he opted to stay silent for the last couple of events. I wanted him to comment on the events to ask questions to give me his opinion on what he thought. But then he said "and so what happens after the death of Jared? What happened to Sophie?"
"It's the end of the story doc, and I don't think I'm up for writing a sequel" I tell him.
"I always wonder about books. Do the characters seize to exist once we close the book? Who will tell their story if no one is looking" Dr. Claremont had dove into his philosophical world once more and I only sat there listening. These kinds of speculations of his were never to be interrupted.
"Till next time maybe I'll convince you to get started on that sequel. For now I can't help but notice that Sophie's father had to get an honorable mention till the very end." The doctor said obviously snapped out of his other-worldly trance.
"Fine, doc. Since you're so invested in trying to find out the history of Sophie's relationship with her father, I'll give you an exclusive inside look. Just for you"
