Sebastian and Sophie were homeschooled for the rest of senior year. Sebastian's leg had taken some time to heal and when it did he worked his best to keep his mother and her toxic thoughts away from Sophie. Mrs. Coleman grew more and more insistent on shipping Sophie off to a mental ward somewhere, but all she cared was that Sophie leave, and be as far away from them as possible. After the departure of her husband, Mrs Coleman sulked around for only about 2 weeks, and then came back one Friday night with her new boyfriend. He was 12 years younger than her and was actually a client of hers going through a divorce. Sebastian hated him and how he treated his mother when he got a little drunk, Sophie didn't really care and saw it as the usual from when her father was around. Ricky, the boyfriend, stayed only for about 3 months, nearing the end of senior year for Sophie and Sebastian, then left when Mr. Coleman came back one night, at Sebastian's request, and kicked him out.
Mr. Coleman didn't stay long though. One altercation with Sophie had him leaving instantly. It was after graduation and Sebastian was planned to go off to college in a week. This was an especially hard time for Sophie because she didn't know what she'd do without her brother. He was planning on going ahead, staying in the dorms until he found a suitable apartment for him and his sister to stay in. Until then Sophie had to stay back at home with her parents, who both despised her.
"I've decided to get a job while you're gone Sebastian, I'll be able to save some money to help with rent when we finally move in together." Sophie told her brother, happy with that little spark of positivity she had managed to find for herself.
"You don't have to Sophie. But it'll be great for you to have something you can do while I'm gone" her brother told her as he sorted through his belongings.
"As if she'll be able to keep a job anyway" their mother who had just walked into the room slurred. She has been getting drunk a lot lately, what with her golden boy leaving her.
"Seriously, mom it's 10 a.m isn't a little too early?" Sebastian asked her disgustingly.
"Well your father is gone and I found his secret stash, shhh" she giggled. Sebastian grew anxious with that, his father would surely beat up his wife if he found out she opened one of his drinks. He decided to cancel his plans for that night so he can keep an eye out for when his father came back to prevent him from starting anything.
"Your father seems to have found some younger bimbo, cause he's not coming back this week. Looks like you won't be able to say goodbye." Their mom says over dinner, still seemingly drunk. The hypocrisy in her words didn't go unnoticed. Sebastian decided it was safe to go through with his plans and left for the night, leaving Sophie with her drunk mother.
Their mother was actually right about the younger bimbo, seeing as Mr. Coleman decided to bring her home with him. Sophie was mad at her insensitive father, bringing someone younger, almost her age, home to his miserable wife. He noticed that his wife was drunk and deducted it was from his stash, he was mad and was already yelling, but then Sophie yelled right back at him, defending her mother for once. Of course he wouldn't have it and he started to hit her. Mrs. Coleman, only looked on, relieved to be spared the beating, but then saw the young woman that had come with her husband and went after her. When Mr. Coleman saw this he left Sophie, with a bruised face and cut lip, and turned towards his wife. Sophie tried to pry him off, but she was too weak, so she went to the kitchen and got a knife. She only threatened to hurt him, then told the girl to take him and leave. Obeying Sophie's commands the girl pulled Mr. Coleman and left. When Sophie turned to her mother, lying in a heap on the floor, she reached for her, but her mother quickly pushed her away, "you ruin everything" she said with so much hate, then got up and ran after her husband calling for him to wait.
Sebastian returned that night to find Sophie alone at home, and they never saw their parents again.
