Today is prom, the big day. I am walking up to Leighton's front door to pick her up. James is driving his own car to go pick up his date, Danielle, who he has been talking to for a while. So because of that, James is already gone, and Leighton and I will be driving to prom alone. Her mom opens the door and welcomes me in. I am in a tux to match her dress, which is a royal blue satin thigh-high slit long dress, that I haven't seen her in yet. I am holding a bouquet of roses for her. Her and Katie got ready together, and Katie is going with a junior, who's name is Dylan, and he is a band geek. Katie has already gotten picked up. Not long later, I hear high heels clicking on the hardwood. I look up to see Leighton coming down the stairs, and she looks beautiful. I walk to the bottom of the stairs and hand her the roses, taking her hand.
"You look amazing." I say.
"Thank you, you look really good too." She says.
"No problem, and thanks."
"Of course, I love the roses. They're so pretty."
"I thought you'd like them."
Her mom butts in. She doesn't know it's a fake relationship and she's always talking about how cute we are together.
"You guys are just the cutest! Ready to go take pictures?" She asks.
"Yep. All set." Leighton says.
We go in her backyard in front of her pretty lake and take some really good pictures, well her mom takes them. Then we go to the car and I open the door for her to get in.
"Thank you." She says.
"Uh huh." I say.
I get in the car and start driving us. We listen to music and she looks out the window. I reach over and lace my fingers through hers, she looks over at me.
"What was that for?" She asks.
"Practicing." I say and wink.
"Ok. I have something to say."
"What?"
"I know you went to prom for junior year, but senior year prom is way more important. It's your last prom, and your most meaningful one. I know I probably wouldn't be your first choice of a girl to take under any other circumstances, so I am gonna try to make it extra special for you." She says. This warms my heart and makes me feel good inside.
"Aww, that's so sweet of you to say. Thank you, that means a lot to me. But this is your first prom, so I'm gonna try to make it special for you too. Plus you're a really cool girl, and you're really pretty, so you definitely would be up there on my list of possible girls to ask to prom regardless of the circumstances." I say, which was very much true.
"You really mean that?" She asks, looking pleased.
"Of course. I told you I would never lie to you."
"Well thanks, being called pretty means a lot coming from you." She says.
"How?" I ask.
"Because you're literally so freakin hot. You're way out of my league."
"No way. You're way out of my league if anything. Any guy would be lucky to have you." I say, squeezing her hand tighter.
"You're just saying that." She says with a blush.
"No I'm not. I mean it. And thanks for calling me hot by the way, I was starting to think you weren't attracted to me anymore." I say sarcastically.
"Why? Because I haven't kissed you in two weeks?" She asks.
"That might have something to do with it."
"I haven't kissed you because you said you would never date me in real life, it hurt my feelings." She says. This makes me feel really bad. I didn't mean to hurt her feelings, and I wasn't really serious. I was only serious about the being disrespectful to James part. It hurt me to know that she was hurt by that.
"Really? I'm so sorry, I really didn't mean to hurt your feelings. Plus, I wasn't really serious about never dating you, I just meant that I didn't want to lose James. And dating you for real would definitely make me lose him." I say.
"Oh, so if it weren't for James, you would date me in real life?" She asks excitedly.
"Duh. Have you seen yourself?"
"Yeah, I have. But I always thought I never had a chance with you."
It felt good to know she thought of me like that before the fake relationship.
"That's ridiculous. You need better self confidence, if you had that, you could get any guy you wanted."
"Good to know." She says.
"So, now that we have that cleared up. Will I be getting a kiss tonight?" I ask.
"We'll see." She says with a smirk.
"I'll take that." I say, smiling.
