Warnings: mentions of death, mentions of abuse, mentions of slavery mentions of nightmares, Fluff.
It started after Ryloth. The Republic forces managed to free one of the many Twi'lek villages, rescuing its people from torture and slavery by the Separatists. Kix was patching up Fives and Echo when they first heard you.
You were holding a sobbing Twi'lek girl, swaying her back and forth in your arms in an attempt to sooth her to rest. The poor ad'ika had lost her parents to the Separatist's abuse, and she was seemingly inconsolable. That is, until you started to sing.
"Dancing bears, painted wings, things I almost remember~"
The soldiers who were sitting a few feet away were absolutely mesmerized by your voice, their movements halting as you sung to the girl, who quickly soothed and fell asleep on your shoulder by the songs' end.
"And a song someone sings, once upon a December."
Fives was the first. A month after that moment on Ryloth, Fives awoke from a horrid nightmare. Every time he would try to sleep, moments of war would play in his head, and wake him in a cold sweat. He had considered going to you before, but always hesitated; he didn't want to bother the 501rst's head medic in the middle of the night. But that night, Fives held a steel resolve as he snuck out of the barracks and went to your quarters.
He knocked quietly, and stood patiently waiting. After a moment of not hearing movement, Fives figured you were asleep, and turned to go, but halted when the door swished open.
"Hey Fives," you smiled up at the arctrooper, leaning slightly against the doorframe, "what are you doing up this time of night?"
"Um, I came to ask you something," Fives stuttered, a wave of nervousness coursing through him as you looked up curiously, "m' sorry if I woke you or anything-"
You chuckled quietly, "you didn't wake me at all, I was just wrapping up some of the medical reports for our new shinnies. What's troubling you?"
"You remember that little Twi'lek girl you were holding after we freed that village on Ryloth?" he asked, smiling as pink dusted your cheeks in embarrassment and you stuttered out a conformation.
It was his turn to be embarrassed now, looking away from you, "I was, uh, hoping you would sing to me like you did to her. I've been havin' nightmares recently-" he stopped as you took his hand, squeezing it gently.
"Of course, Fives. I know what the toll of war takes on any soldier- don't be afraid to come to me like this in the future," you stroked your thumb over his hand soothingly, and Fives swore he could've cried, but he'd never admit it, "c'mon, let's get you back to the barracks. Do you have a song request?"
"Could you sing what you sang to her- it was really beautiful, just like you," he chuckled quietly as you playfully punched his arm at the compliment, not missing the blush returning to your cheeks.
"Of course, you charmer," you whispered as the two of you approached the barracks, before stopping outside.
"And Fives," you gently tugged on his hand still entwined with yours, "let your brothers know that I'm here for them too. I want to make sure my soldiers are getting the rest they need, and deserve."
Fives smiled, his heart swelling in his chest as he typed in the room code, "Thanks, Doc."
The two of you entered the room quietly, not wanting to disturb the other soldiers' sleep. As Fives laid down on his bunk, you came to kneel by his head, a gentle smile painted on your face. As you began to softly sing, you ran your fingers soothingly through his short black locks, his eyes fluttering closed at the affection.
"Dancing bears, painted wings, things I almost remember. And a song, someone sings, once upon a December."
Fives smiled as you sang, your soothing voice, combined with your actions, was lulling him to rest. But he wanted to stay awake just a bit longer- just to hear your angelic voice.
"Someone holds me safe and warm. Horses prance through a silver storm. Figures dancing gracefully, across my memory~"
Soon though, Fives finally stopped restraining the tides of sleep, letting the waves wash over him. Dreaming of a life without war.
"Far away, long ago, glowing dim as an ember, things my heart used to know, things it yearns to remember~"
"And a song, someone sings, once upon a December."
By the songs end, you smiled at the arctrooper's rhythmic breathing, as peaceful sleep finally came to him. You whispered a good night, and softly kissed the trooper's forehead.
Rising quietly from your kneeled position, you began to make your way to the door, not feeling a set of eyes following you. An arm reached out, gently brushing yours as you tiptoed past a bunk. You inhaled quickly, biting your lip to resist the urge to scream, turning to see Kix smiling up at you.
"Hey, Y/n, I heard you singin and-"
"Of course, Kix. What song?"
After that night, it became part of your routine to stop by the barracks to check on the boys, and to sing soft lullabies and sooth down those that were kept awake by nightmares. Eventually, stopping by Rex's room also became part of that nightly schedule, after he came to you one night when the nightmares were just too intense. You would do anything for your boys, anything to ease their suffering. You wished that the war would end quickly, so that they could finally live a peaceful life- without stress, and without nightmares.
