Genes are fickle. Unbiased and ruthless. It's a lucky dip, but can sting like hell when your ill-fated zygote draws the short straw.

In some cases, literally. Like yours for example.

You hadn't always been 'short'. At some point in your early teens, you'd actually been an average height. But as the years progressed and peers grew closer to the sky, you stayed the same. It wasn't obvious at first: adults telling you that you'll get a growth spurt was a small hope you clung onto with a death grip. You finished high school with that same hope -- albeit, faith dwindling -- and continued into your early twenty's.

That aforementioned 'growth spurt'?

It never came.

By this time you had well and truly accepted your fate as the token 'short person' in all of your groups. You tried to not let it bother you. In all fairness, it didn't, and most of the time you were perfectly content with your short stature, that is until someone brought it up. Until someone teased you about it.

That someone being Ace Copular: resident tall green nuisance.

You had been making dinner at the band house as you always did, since the others were usually busy or exhausted, when you tried to reach for a particular flavouring in the uppermost cabinet. It was out of your reach by a large stretch which no amount of jumping on tippy toes could fix. You tried regardless, and almost considered climbing into the bench top before you heard a familiar whistle come down the hall.

"What's cookin' good lookin'?" He called, the flirtatious comment not escaping you. You knew that he had seen you when you heard a wheezing chuckle.

"Havin' trouble, shortie?" You turned around at his use of the nickname he knew you hated and saw Ace leaning against the doorway, grinning. Upon seeing your agitated face, he fell into another laughing fit.

"Yeah, yeah. Buzz off." You grumbled, deciding to forsake the extra flavour to protect of what was left of your dignity. Making a point of ignoring his deranged cackling, you turned your attention back to the bubbling pot of soup.

"Don't be like that, I can always reach it for ya." Ace said, amusement still in his voice.

"I'm perfectly capable reaching for things myself, thank you very much." You sassed. Turning to him, who was now leaning against the opposite counter, you gave him a pointed glare. "And I don't see you reaching for anything right now, do I?"

A big, mischievous grin spread across his face like the cheshire cat as he said "No, you don't.". A few long strides took him to the opposite side of the kitchen, right in front of you. It was then you realized just how much taller he was up close. Your heart raced at the proximity.

"But do you, now?"

You hadn't even noticed that he had grabbed the flavouring and placed it in your hand.

He must have seen the growing blush on your cheeks because he didn't move away, and placed his hands on the bench either side of you.

"Is there anything else I can do for you, chef?" He was teasing you again, and you weren't going to have a bar of it.

"Just kiss me already, you idiot!" You grabbed his collar and pulled him to your level, kissing him roughly. Ace was shocked at first, but was quick to reciprocate. He mumbled 'jump' against your lips, and after he caught your legs he slid you onto the bench. The kiss became passionate and needy as the sexual tension that had been building up for months was addressed.

As Ace was about to lift your top off, 2D's cry from the doorway startled you both.

"I make me sandwiches there!"
