I walked through the rafters of the partially constructed beach house, a beer can loosely sitting in my grip.
"Hey, Klutz," JJ called from below. "You're gonna get yourself hurt."
I chuckled a little and took another sip of my beer.
"It warms my heart to know you care so much," I replied.
      "Uh-huh," he mumbled.
"Whoa!" I said as my foot slipped off the next rafter.
As I began to fall I instinctively reached out and caught onto one of the rafters before I could fall on my face. I let go and landed nimbly on my feet.
"Way to not die!" Pope called out.
      "Saved the beer!" I said.
The rest of the gang chuckled.
My eyes opened a little more as they spotted an MP3 player resting on a small workbench.
"Hey, look what one of the workers left," I said as I held it up.
Kie and Pope gave me a look as I pocketed it.
"I want it," I said.
"I think JJ's 'klepto-ness' is rubbing off on you," Pope said.
JJ laughed and punched my shoulder as I walked past.
"I am not a kleptomaniac," JJ said.
"That's right JJ," Kie said. "Deny, deny, deny. Maybe one day it will go away."
JJ scoffed as I sat down next to him and took another swig of beer.
"That's, what, a three-story fall to the deck?" Pope said, looking up at the roof.
JJ and I peered up, to see John B balancing on one foot on the edge of the roof, a beer can in his hand.
"I'd give you a one in three chance of surviving," Pope said.
"Just for the record, when you fall and splatter yourself on the deck, I'm outta here. That's sounds like someone else's mess to clean up."
JJ chuckled from next to me.
"I think I'm with Sky on this one," he said.
"Should I do it?" John B asked sarcastically.
JJ and I simultaneously rolled our eyes.
"Yeah, do it," Pope said. "I'll shoot you on the way down."
I watched as he pretended to shoot John B with a drill.
"You'll shoot me?" John B said.
      "Yep."
"Pow," John B said as he mimicked firing a finger gun at Pope.
"They're gonna have Japanese toilets and towel warmers," Kie said in disgust as she read the plans.
"Of course they are," JJ said. "Why wouldn't they?"
"This used to be a turtle habitat," Kie said. "But who cares, I guess."
"Well, I can't have cold towels," JJ mocked. "Sky knows what I'm talking about."
I scoffed and gave him a glare, sending him into a fit of laughter.
I grabbed an empty beer can and tossed it at him, which he narrowly dodged.
"Can you not kill yourself?" Kie called up to John B.
"Don't spill that beer," JJ called up. "I'm not giving you another one."
"Whoa! Oh, shit," John B cursed as he stumbled a bit. I watched as his beer can sunk through the air and clattered against the deck. It sloshed onto the wood and made a small puddle.
"Of course you did," JJ grumbled. "Like right when I told you not to."
I laughed as Kie rolled her eyes.
"Smooth," she said monotoned.
John B grumbled and made grabbing motions toward it.
"Hey!" a deep, angry voice shouted.
I jumped a little as Pope leaned over the railing and looked at the driveway.
"Hey, uh, security's here," he said. "Time to wrap it up."
"Gary, is that you?" JJ said as I hurried over to the workbench. "Gary, good to see you man!"
"Ooh," I said as my eyes landed on a switchblade.
I snagged it just as JJ's hand clamped around my wrist and pulled me after him.
I saw the two guards just behind us and laughed as JJ stumbled to the side, dodging the hands of one of them. I staggered out of the way of him and continued on.
"Let's move it, JJ," I called back.
My eyes widened as one of the guards grabbed JJ.
"Hey, not much of a hugger, man," he said as he tried to wrestle free.
I threw my half-drank beer can at the chubby man, causing him to let go off JJ.
We ran out of the side of the house and tumbled into John B's van, Pope soon after us.
"Bus is leavin'," John B said as he honked the horn.
We pulled onto the road as JJ, Pope, and I looked out the side door.
"Check out Gary gunnin' for a raise," Pope laughed.
"Come on, Gary," JJ called to him.
"Come get your promotion, Gary!" I laughed.
"You're so close," JJ taunted. "Come on, boy. You can do it. Oh, they don't pay you enough."
"Stop it, guys," Kie said. "You're gonna give him a heart attack."
She pulled us back into the van and closed the door.
"That kind of initiative is just begging to be punished," JJ said, causing me to laugh.
I fell into the seat next to him.
After a short drive through Figure Eight and part of the Cut, we arrived at the Chateau, John B's house.
It only took a few hours for people to arrive at the party we were hosting.
In just a few short moments, the party had begun.
Nearly everyone had a solo cup or a can in their hand and music was playing wildly from everywhere.
I laughed as some of my friends from around the Cut began to dance wildly.
I shook my head and took another drink of my beer before dismissing myself and walking around to mingle.
I caught sight of Kie sitting around the fire with some of her friends. She seemed to be in the middle of a heated rant. I chuckled a little as I walked over to her.
She was currently ranting about some type of plastic. I put her in a headlock and began to wrestle with her.
She groaned and pushed me off her.
      "Get off, Sky," she snapped.
I stumbled back into the sand from my drunkenness and staggered back to my feet. I continued through the party. I saw Pope talking up a girl by the house. I tossed him a clumsy salute, which caused him to nod at me in response.
I accidentally bumped into someone, causing a slur of apologies to come out of my mouth.
"Ooh," I said as I grabbed another beer off a table and cracked it open.
I brought it to my lips, a little dribbling down the side of my jaw.
I waved to a few people, accidentally bumped into a few, then tripped over my feet and fell to the sand, my beer spilling everywhere.
"Oh, no," I whined as I quickly picked it up.
I heard a familiar laugh and looked up to see JJ.
I chuckled a little and smiled at him.
      "Hiya," I said.
He chuckled again, then pulled me to my feet.
He began to brush the sand off my shirt and shoulders.
"How many have you had?" he said as he took the beer can out of my hand, despite my protests.
"I don't know," I whined. "I lost count at four."
I whined again as he took a long drink of my beer can.
      "I wasn't done with that," I said.
      "You are now."
"But there's so many people here to talk to..."
      "The party's winding down anyway."
      "Aw," I groaned.
I didn't realize he had been leading me back to the house until my feet met the stairs to the porch.
"Oh," I said, slightly surprised as I examined the stairs.
I lifted one of my feet slowly and attempted to put it on the stair, but missed. I got it the second try. The next step I struggled with. I stumbled to the side, JJ catching me.
"Okay," he said. "I haven't got all night. I've still gotta find a girl to hookup with tonight."
I gasped as he lifted me up with ease and walked me into the house, tossing me down on the pull out couch. I groaned as he pulled my shoes off my feet. I heard one bang as one dropped to the floor, then a few moments later another one in a different place.
      "Rest up," he said.
I giggled a little and picked my head off the pillow.
"Why don't you join me?" I said fake-flirtatiously and lifted my eyebrows a couple times.
He chuckled and placed a hand on my face forcing my head back down on the pillow.
"Go to sleep," he said, before walking back outside.
I groaned a bit before shifting onto my stomach.
I was kind of tired after all...
