Later the next day Kie, Sarah, and I were sitting in the van, the door open. Kie was holding the piece of paper that had the rough sketch of the well and how to get the gold."He said it looked something like this," Kie said.
"So..." Sarah said, not understanding.
I stared at the crudely drawn image, not understanding either.
"That's 50 feet down, and they're using 100 feet rope," Kie said. "So I guess this little wagon will go...straight to the gold room."
We laughed a little at that last part.
"Who drew this?" Sarah said while she laughed.
"A monkey," I offered while I laughed.
"Who do you think?" Kie said as she chuckled.
We looked over to where the boys were tinkering with the pulley system. Pope was looking this way as we laughed. We looked over as JJ approached.
"Kie," he called. "This better work. We can't pawn this if there's a giant wheat symbol on it."
He dropped three rectangle plates of gold down on the floor of the van.
"It's gonna work," she said as she picked up the blowtorch she brought.
We got set up and lowered the gold into a pot, then began to heat the gold up, very slowly melting it. We smiled as we watched it melt, removing the wheat symbol and ingot shape. Once we had melted it sufficiently we got into the van and drove into town, making our way to the pawn shop.
John B stopped the van on the side of the road, we started to climb out.
"Hell of a job melting it down, Dr Frankenstein,"JJ said to Kie.
"Like you could've done better," she said.
"I could have done much better," he retorted. "I took a welding class."
John B walked over and stopped their arguing before it could get too far.
"Calm down, guys," I said.
"Easy for you guys to say," JJ said, holding the chunk of gold we melted down. "You're not the one that has to pawn this piece of shit off. How did I get this job, anyway?"
"Cause you're the best liar," Pope said.
We walked into the shop, the bell above the door jingling.
"Afternoon, ma'am," JJ said.
She returned the statement.
"I see you buy gold," he said. Kie and I wandered down the aisles, pretending to look at stuff as he formed a story for the gold we were selling.
The woman was very skeptical of the gold, performing a couple tests to make sure it's real. The rest of us watched curiously, wondering what she would say. She immediately noticed that it was melted down and he claimed that his mom melted jewelry down. She weighed it to seven pounds.
She dismissed herself and walked into the back room, most likely to talk to someone higher up. We continued to wander the aisles, looking at the many odds and ends.
"You and JJ have been looking at each other differently lately..." Kie said subtly.
I tossed a glance to her, where she stood next to me.
"Differently, how?" I asked.
"More...intimately," she said suggestively. "Why might that be?"
I blushed a little and didn't meet her eyes.
