When I woke up daylight was already streaming through the windows. I picked my head up and looked to the side to see Kie on the couch-bed next to me. Her legs tangled with mine, her head basically hanging off her side of the bed.
I groaned and sat up, pushing myself out of the bed and walking over to the kitchen. I walked past it and down the hallway. I looked into the bedroom to see JJ kissing a girl on the bed. I rolled my eyes and continued down to the bathroom. I opened the door just as John B was exiting.
      "Oh, morning, Sky," he said.
      "Hey," I replied.
I went inside and used the bathroom, then brushed my teeth with the toothbrush I always left here.
When I walked back outside, Kie was waking up and John B was starting to clean up.
I walked over to the bed and found one of my red converse on the floor. I tugged it on, then began to look around for the other.
"Anyone seen my other shoe...?" I groaned as I rubbed a hand over my face.
Kie groaned a little and lazily pointed to the other side of the bed.
"Over there," she tiredly said. "By the door."
I walked over and tugged it on, not bothering to tie it all the way.
John B set a cup of black coffee in my hands as he walked outside to greet Pope.
I downed it quickly, then set it on the table and walked outside, surveying the mess from the party.
"I'm gonna head out," I said. "Anyone seen my board?"
Pope tossed a glance my way.
"I saw some guys playing with it last night by the fire."
I walked down to the extinguished fire and grabbed my board out of the sand.
"Aw, man," I said. "They chipped the grip tape."
"Boo hoo," Pope taunted. "One of my skateboards is totally ruined from a little chip...what am I gonna do? I only have one. It's not like I have hundreds at home..."
"Ha ha," I said.
I began to walk over to the road as John B called out to me.
"You sure you're good to skate?" he asked.
"I'll be fine," I called back, then dropped the board to the ground and hopped on, pushing myself forward.
I road down most of the cut, then made my way through Figure Eight up to my street.
Mine was a two story house, painted a creamy white. The front door was a dark brown, which matched the shutters.
There were pillars in the front and a small balcony over the front door.
I stopped riding and stepped off my board, kicking it into my hand and jogging around to the back.
Just next to the back deck was a set of stairs that went down into the basement, where my room was. When I was young my room was upstairs, but I convinced my mom to let me move to the basement.
I told it her I wanted the space and my old room was too small, but the truth was it was easier to sneak out of. Although, the space from my mom and sisters was nice.
I began to walk down the stairs, but froze as a voice spoke up.
"Where were you?" it said.
I turned to see my mom sitting on the deck with a glass of wine in her hand.
I silently cursed and walked back up the stairs and walked up onto the deck.
"I was at John B's," I said.
"Of course you were," she said.
I nodded slowly then turned again to walk down to my room.
"What did you do at John B's?" she asked slowly.
I turned back to her.
"He just had some people over. We had a fire. Some music," I said.
I had found it was easier to lie by telling partial truths. He did have some people over. There was a fire. And there was music.
"Who was there?"
"Oh, not that many people you would know."
"Who was there that I do know?"
"Kiara, Pope...JJ," I said.
"Mhm," she said with distaste.
I couldn't tell where she was looking with her sunglasses on. But it appeared as though she was looking over the water.
My mother had never liked JJ, she didn't mind Pope or Kie, but JJ was a different story.
She didn't like his overall person. Usually referring to him as 'the white trash boy' or 'the criminal dirtbag'.
JJ, being my best friend, meant I usually defended him even though she didn't like him. This tended to be the topic of most of our arguments.
"How many times do I have to tell you that I don't want you hanging out with them?"
"Them? Or do you just mean John B and JJ? Because they're not in the same social status as us. Hm?"
"I don't want them to be rubbing off on you," she said. "You have a bright future."
I scoffed and nodded, looking away from her.
"Yeah, I know."
"No more," she said sternly.
My gaze snapped back onto her.
"I'm not gonna stop hanging out with them, mom. They're my friends. JJ is my best friend. And frankly, I don't care what you think about them."
I turned on my heel and briskly walked down the stairs before she could argue further.
I opened the door to the basement and slammed it behind me. I walked through the mud room and across the movie room, to where the door to my bedroom was. I stepped inside and shut it behind me.
I leaned my board against the dresser and kicked my converse off, collapsing onto the bed.
I heard my phone ping and tugged it out of my pocket. It was JJ.
-hey, Agatha's hitting later tonight. make sure to put the storm shield on the stairway.
I smiled at JJ's care and moved to respond.
•i will. thanks.
I sighed and pocketed my phone again, then left my room and went back outside. My mother had gone back in.
I walked over to the large shed and pulled out the large plastic cover. I dragged it over to the basement stairs and set it on top. I staked it to the ground, sealing the in-ground stairway from flooding.
I walked onto the deck and walked through the glass sliding doors into the large, modern kitchen.
My mom was sitting at the counter, reading over papers and talking on the phone.
I walked past her and opened the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water before heading back downstairs.
I sat down at my desk and began to aimlessly scroll through my computer.

Several hours later, when night fell, I was laying in bed listening to the wind and the rain. Every so once in a while thunder would boom and the house would shake a little.
I furrowed my eyebrows a little, then grabbed my phone and called JJ.
He picked up almost instantly.
"Hey," he said.
"Hey, are you hearing this?" I asked.
"Yeah, it's crazy."
"Where are you?"
"I'm fine, Sky. I'm at John B's house."
"Good."
"I can't remember the last time we had a storm this bad," he said.
"Me either. My entire house is shaking."
"Damn," JJ chuckled. "That's a lot of house to shake."
I laughed and rolled my eyes.
"Shut up, you asshole," I said.
"What?" he laughed. "I'm just saying."
"You know I don't like it when people talk about how rich my family is."
"Yeah, well, everybody else likes to talk about it."
I rolled my eyes and scoffed.
I heard a muffled voice shout from his end.
"It's Sky!" JJ shouted back to the voice.
"Hi, Sky!" John B's voice called.
I laughed.
"Hi, John B."
"He says 'hi'," JJ said.
"I'm never gonna be able to sleep through all this thunder," JJ said.
I chuckled a little.
"Yes, you will," I said. "You could sleep through an entire tornado sweeping up the house."
He laughed at my comment.
"There's gonna be so much damage to clean up," he grumbled.
"Yeah," I said. "Yeah, there will be."
"I hope my house isn't too bad," he said. "My dad'll kill me if I don't clean it up fast."
I exhaled slowly at his words.
I knew how bad JJ's relationship with his dad was and I knew how bad his dad could be.
I never know what to say to him about it. My dad is lucky if he's home for three months a year, he's always off on one business trip or another.
JJ's dad could get mad over the smallest things. Hell, several times I've been over at his house when he throws a fit.
And many of those times JJ sent me running out of the house so I don't have to suffer through it too. No matter how many times I had told him to come with me, he always said he needed to stay.
I sighed into the receiver and attempted to change the direction of the conversation.
"What did you do today?" I asked.
"Oh, you know, I mowed some lawns, then I headed to John B's. We had a fire and hotdogs for lunch and..."
At some point when he was talking my eyelids got heavy and it was harder and harder for me to pay attention.
"That's nice..." I said tiredly, even though I had no idea what he had just said.
I heard a soft chuckle on the other end then a moment of silence.
"Goodnight, Sky," he said, then ended the call.
The phone slipped from my hand as I dipped into sleep.
"Night, JJ," I mumbled.
