Days passed, Chieko made calls to records offices, to Kenji and the police department and to her college. No one had concrete details about her time there. It was a small town, a couple of hours from the city. She knew who she had to call, but didn't want to do it around Shota. She needed to know on her own, and figure out why it was hidden from Shota in the first place.
"You look deep in thought...want some tea?" He'd sat cross legged in front of her, and she hadn't even noticed.
She was consumed with finding out the truth.
"Look. Chieko, we need to talk." Shota's face looked placid, as usual. His voice was calm.
"He's so hard to read..." she thought, her heartbeat sped up, in anticipation.
"Well?" She leaned in closer, "you can't make me wait. I don't have the patience."
He chuckled and sat his tea on the coffee table.
"Chieko, I know you're not telling me something. I find it extremely unfair."
She bowed her head and stared at the rug.
"I'm not angry. But we've talked about this. I'm here for you, you can't keep hiding things."
"I know.." she mumbled. " Well. I don't know. That's part of the problem." She looked back up at his face.
He did look a little hurt.
"I saw the photo. How much do you know?" He clasped his hands together and leaned on his knees.
"Well. I know we must have dated, while I was away. Clearly. That ring is the one he gave me after the incident. The certificate is fake, I've called that prefecture and asked for the records." Her face was turning red, " and these letters are kind of intimate."
Shota fought back the pang of jealousy, and calmly nodded.
"I don't remember anything, just making educated guesses at this point. Well..." she tapped her chin, "I do feel like I remember a coffee place. I have a vague memory of his face drinking coffee."
"Why did he call you Yua?" Shota fidgeted a little.
"It's a pet name. It means love. Or binding love. I'm not sure how it came to be, though..." Chieko felt embarrassed. Like she'd cheated.
"Don't be anxious. You've done nothing wrong, love." He took her chin in his palm.
"But Shota...we slept together. Several times. I initiated a few of them. I enjoyed it. I asked for more." Her shoulders drooped and her head hung.
"and what's more, you had to see it."
"Chieko. I don't care." He pulled her face back up, "Who are you with now?"
"You.."
"Exactly." He pulled her into a hug and squeezed.
"Sho, I need to tell you something."
"What is it?" He pulled away to look at her face.
"I know who to call. I don't know how I know...I just do. But I need you to give me some space. I don't know why I hid this from you before. I don't plan on hiding it but I would like the chance to explain in my own time." Chieko nodded firmly.
He leaned back a bit, "Okay. But, Chieko, I'm not kidding when I say: we will have problems if you keep trying to hide things. Privacy is one thing; lying and hiding important details...life threatening details, is not okay."
