*short chapter- memory*

Chieko was gone.
Tatsuo sat at the edge of the bed looking down at his hands.

"What have I done..." he thought, as his vision grew blurry. He turned his head to look at the ring, it'd bounced onto the floor in the ruckus.
He bent to grab it.

"One day." He whispered, as he nestled it back into its box and the night stand.
He turned towards the door as his phone buzzed

Jiro: Don't forget your role in this, boy.

This was Jiro's fault.
"If he wouldn't of  forced me into this mess, to save his own ass...She'd still love me." Tatsuo tossed the phone onto the bed.

                   •••••••••••••••••••••••

"We're sorry, your call can not be completed at this time. The number you're dialing has been disconnected."
Tatsuo slammed the phone down.
"How could she do this? She dropped everything they had..." He glanced back at Jiro, trying to hide how upset he was.

"She stiff ya?" Jiro chuckled.

"No. She found out about this.." he waved his hands around, "and she left."

"You let her leave? She could go to the police, boy, do you know what you've done?" Jiro's voice raised, he was in Tatsuo's face.

Tatsuo felt indignant. Chieko would never tell anyone...would she?
He stood straight, making himself taller. He towered over Jiro, "I will end your pathetic existence if you ever question me again."

Jiro leaned back, laughing, "Oh, now you want to be big, huh. Good.  Maybe she should have left you sooner."
Tatsuo turned with his fist raised to swing, as a voice drifted from the shadows, "Men..men, is this any way for Overhaul's associates to conduct themselves?"

They froze, "No, sir."

Kai stepped from the shadows, "Then correct yourselves. I have a proposition for you."

Tatsuo straightened up again, he stood several inches taller than the other men, but still felt small. Overhaul was intense.

"You've been consistent. The quirks you're bringing me are useful. I'd say a contract is in order.."

"Wait. I don't think this is what's best...." Tsu tried to interject.
Jiro's eyes shot daggers, "Shut. Up." He mouthed.

"No." Overhaul stepped forward, "you want to leave? After dealing with Yakuza money?" He laughed in Tsu's face. "That won't do."

Tatsuo frowned, "Then I need guarantees. I need safety and I need men."

"Done. Do your job and you'll get that plus. Your safety is guaranteed as long as you hold up your end."

"Not my safety. My fiancé." Tsu paused, "Well. A hero."

Overhaul raised his brows, "I'll consider it. Unless she becomes directly involved. Then she dies."

Jiro glared.

"Her hero name is Lucidity." Tatsuo said, a bit more quietly.

"I don't care. Don't be late." Overhaul waved a hand passively, as he turned to slink back into the shadows.

Back at the apartment later that night, Tatsuo sat holding Chieko's sweater, when his phone began to buzz.

"Unknown ID"

"Jiro..." Tsu started.

"No. It's me..." her voice sounded scratchy.

"Yua..Chieko...I-"

"No, Tsu. You don't get to talk. I'm only calling to let you know I'll be sending for my stuff."

"Chieko, please."

"No. Tsu. Goodbye." The phone abruptly clicked.

His head hung. He threw the sweater to the side.

So be it.
