"Chieko!" Hawks shuffled sideways, putting Shota between them.
"Keigo..." she glared, "I don't want your explanations. I knew what I was getting myself into, it's not your fault." And with that her face softened.
"Just keep the knives away, Luce, and we can be friends again." He grinned.
"You're in no position to bargain." She chuckled and pulled away from Shota, "what do we do....?"
"I don't know." His monotones voice echoes in the silent building.
"Just go. I'll handle this. You can't be seen here." Hawks waved his hand shooing them away from a now lifeless Jiro.
As he took a large step over the body, Hawks chuckled, "remind me never to piss you off."Shota groaned, "This isn't funny—and you piss me off on a minute by minute basis."
"You're right. Not funny." Hawks shoved them both from behind, "now go. You can't be here. I've got calls to make."
Chieko turned to give Keigo a small hug before nodding and turning to make their way home.
He gave a small smile, "I'm sorry."Back at their building the steps of the fire escape were still down, so they slowly made their way up.
"I'm exhausted. Can we please just....nap?" Chieko groaned.
"You read my mind." Shota agreed.
"But first, snacks." Her eyes almost glowed, "I need a sna—" she stopped abruptly.
"What? What's the hold up?" Shota peered up trying to see what she was staring at. She didn't speak.
He kicked himself up and scaled the side of the fire escape to get to their window, Chieko still sat with wide eyes at the top of the ladder. On the window sill, weighted with a blue velvet box was a letter. Shota lifted the box and stared down at it. It was the same box Tatsuo held up to Chieko that night. Shota glanced back at her and felt a pang of jealousy in his chest.
"We need to go. It's not safe here." She nodded and slowly started back down the ladder.
Shota turned back to grab the paper, it was plain notebook paper folded in half. When they reached the alley below they stood for a moment, unsure of where to go.
Chieko looked pale, like she might be ill.
"That happens the first few times.." Shota mumbled."What?" She broke her daze to look up at him.
"When you think someone you love is dead, and they're actually alive....you feel odd." He glanced at his hands to avoid her gaze.
"Oh....Thank you. And it's not love. It's fear." She began to walk.
Shota watched her pass by and looked down at the paper in his hand and the box in the other. It was addressed to her.
"Where are you going?" He stepped after her."Keigo's place. We can't stay there. Everyone and their mother knows where we live." She sped up, "besides, I didn't like that place anyways."
Shota nodded silently. He remembered how happy she was the day they moved in, how she raved about the kitchen, the space, the windows. It felt like years had passed since then.
"Wait...how do you know where he lives?" Shota growled."Calm down, what are you thinking!?" Chieko was genuinely offended, "we've worked together multiple times."
"At his house?"
"Yes. A few times we did meet there. It seemed better than public settings." She nodded, still making her way across town.
Shota grabbed her arm and pulled her to a stop.
"What are yo-" he pressed his mouth to hers and her body against the alley wall.
"I trust you. But I needed a kiss." Shota grinned.Chieko shivered, "oh you do?"
"Yes. Now lead the way." He waved an arm forward letting her pass, "and here. It's addressed to you."
She fumbled with the edges of the paper for a while, fighting the urge to read it. The front had her name scrawled in familiar handwriting, and that was all.
