Prologue

Zero stood in the shadows listening, waiting. The crowd of middle class browsers mingled around the market talking about things that were greatly insignificant to him. He looked around searching for something worth taking. In the midst of chaos Zero felt a new presence that sent a surge of energy down his spine. He turned his head and smiled.  An oblivious looking woman with a long red dress rarely seen in The Hole was wandering around obviously lost…obviously rich. She had large green eyes heavily covered in dark makeup and full red lips parted in a pathetic stupid look.

Perfect, Zero thought to himself, he hadn’t found much in his last month around town, and now he had struck gold. As far as Zero was conerned she deserved what was coming to her.

Grabbing the tip of his cap Zero made sure to cover his eyes and he moved swiftly through the smog filled dirty streets toward the red dress. The shadows covered every step he took; He was a master of the shadows and darkness after eighteen years of practice. This was Yorkland the biggest city on the northern continent, a city where you either thrive at the top or scavenge and beg at the bottom. Zero had felt the pain of living every day at the bottom and learned quickly how to survive. As he had done many times in the past,  Zero squeezed his hand and felt the flow of another’s energy course through him.

“Oofff” the woman let out an unsuspecting breath as something knocked her to the ground and all the contents of her bag rolled every which way on the dirty street. Unskilled filthy kids waiting in the ally pounced grabbing whatever they could. “No please, please don’t take that!” The woman tried to crawl forward and collect what she could of her trinkets. Zero walked up casually and cat like as he had learned to do and leaned down to pick up what the unskilled scavengers always bypassed.

“Here let me help” Zero lifted the frightened woman to her feet. “Oh thank you, thank you.” She repeated still startled: by being surrounded by filth in the lowest part of town, losing her precious trinkets, or feeling the presence of another briefly invade her? Zero wouldn’t know, neither did he care.

“You wouldn’t happen to know how to get to The Tram would you?” She asked trying to collect her dignity. She was gorgeous Zero noticed her jet black hair contrasted her eyes giving her a look of strength and vulnerability, if she wasn’t such a ditz she might have had a chance in The Hole.

“Yeah it’s about four blocks north of here.”

The woman still looked around lost. Zero took it as his chance to move in. He stepped in close to the woman moving a piece of displaced hair from her face and in the process couldn’t help noticing a large diamond earring dangling from her ear that matched perfectly with the cascading piece that fell on her chest.

As he moved the hair the woman couldn’t help, but blush. Zero moved in towards her ear and whispered “Why is someone as beautiful as you wandering around here by chance” before he could move away he caught the earring in his teeth and skillfully maneuvered it into his mouth.

Zero knew the woman wanted more by the way her body had relaxed to his touch, like they all did.

“I….I… saw the vendors and… and I heard of them and was hoping to fi-“

Zero felt warm lips as he moved in and kissed, he felt pleasure every time being the way he was. He felt her life coursing through every vain in her body he felt the pleasure and surprise that rushed through her as it mixed with his own feelings of enjoyment.  God he loved being a Homaffin.

As he moved out of the kiss he saw the woman was still in shock she stood there staring at him with pleading eyes Pathetic.

Zero nodded his head, put his hands in his pockets and slipped back into the shadows. In his pocket he felt the presence of gold and diamonds. He couldn’t help but smile as he walked on, never looking back.
