Once the party was over, everyone started to bid each other farewell, and left for home.
"Have fun, you two." Toph said. She hugged the two of them before leaving them to go back and live in the swamp. "The past two weeks was fun, not gonna lie. I'll miss you two love birds."
"We'll miss you too, Toph." Katara said. "This is all happening thanks to you and the grandkids."
Toph then went to say goodbye to her daughters and grandkids. As she was doing that, the air nomads went to say goodbye to Katara and the newest member of their family, Zuko.
"Take care of your father, alright, Meelo?" Katara said, humouring her grandson.
"Yes, ma'am." Meelo replied.
"I suppose you're to thank for this," said Zuko, as he got down on eye level with Jinora.
"It no problem, Granpa." Jinora said, trying out the new nickname.
"See you soon, Mother." Tenzin said, hugging Katara. Bumi went over and hugged Zuko maybe a little too tightly.
Opal came over to say her goodbyes too. Lin and the air nomads left on the sky bison going home to Republic City. The metal benders and Opal left on the same airship they came on and went back to their hometown, Zaofu.
"I love you, Mom. Take care." Kya said. "Take care of my new step-dad too!"
Kya stepped into the airship, where Cheif Tonroq, Senna, and Toph were already waiting for her. They set off to the Southern Water Tribe, and planned to drop off Toph at the swamp on their way there.
Eska and Desna congratulated the couple, and went their separate way as well.
Katara and Zuko boarded the Fire Nation airship along with Izumi and Iroh. The four of them went back to the Fire Nation, and the airship made a short stop on Ember Island.
"Bye, Father." Izumi said, hugging Zuko. "Call me if you need anything at all."
"We'll be fine sweetheart." Zuko assured her. "I'll miss you."
"Welcome to the family." Izumi said, turning to Katara.
"Thank you for all your help." Katara said.
"Well then, I don't want to keep you waiting." Izumi told them. "Your things should already be there."
As the family said their last rounds of goodbyes, Zuko and Katara stepped off the airship, and onto the shores of Ember Island. They watched as the airship took off and flew to the Fire Nation Capital.
Once it was out of sight, the old couple walked into their new home. Izumi personally made all the arrangements needed for their house to be ready by the time they came back from the Earth Kingdom.
The couples stepped inside, and saw that indeed, all their stuff has already been delivered. Katara saw a side table full of framed pictures. On one side, was a picture of her family. On the other, a portrait of Zuko's family. In the middle, was the picture Opal took on the bunker when they recreated the fireflies scene.
The old couple changed from their wedding attires to more casual clothing. They explored the rest of their beachside home together, finding it a perfect mix of both their cultures. Katara reminded herself to give her compliments to Izumi about her servants' interior designing next time they meet.
The sun was setting, and Zuko and Katara agreed to eat dinner out. They walked to a nearby seafood restaurant, and enjoyed their meals talking about things they could do on the beach and in their house.
When they finished eating, they payed for their food, and tipped generously. Instead of going back home, they decided to walk along the beach.
They removed their shoes, and felt the cold water on their feet. They walked alone, hand in hand, listening to the crashing of the waves. The couple was at peace, and felt truly happy.
Sometimes, you fall in love with someone, yet never realise it. Sometimes, that's just how it's meant to be. You move on from that person, and start to love someone else. Maybe even start a family. For some people, that was the end. But for others, the person they forgot about a long time ago, comes back knocking on their door.
Love knows no boundaries. Love will always find a way. It comes and goes, but for a reason. It's so unpredictable, yet so beautiful. Tonight, love proves itself, once again, that love is superior.
"Destiny really is a funny thing." Katara whispered. Zuko leaned over and kissed Katara on the forehead. There they were, under the night sky, hearts fully contented knowing that they have each other. The couple couldn't wait to start their new journey together. Their second chance at forever.
