There was a loud crash in the labyrinth. The witch of the labyrinth had nearly been defeated, but not quite. Midori, her long green hair and clothing whipping in the air, dashed past. She threw several daggers at it with precision, making sure it couldn't escape her partner's final attack. Runa, a tall agile girl dressed in purple, appeared from the shadows. She held her scythe high in the air and swung with a large amount of force, easily splitting the witch in two. Runa landed on the ground next to Midori as the labyrinth around them crumbled. They both untransformed, and Midori went to collect the witch's grief seed after the labyrinth disappeared completely.
"I think this will be all for tonight," Midori commented, turning back to Runa. Lately, the two of them hunted together rather than on shifts due to some visitors of theirs, who were standing a ways off. The two had been watching them the whole time.
"Those two are tired," Runa remarked. "Let us go back home."
Midori smiled and shook her head. "You three go on ahead. I want to say hi to the others real quick."
Runa looked at her and paused, then nodded in understanding. She didn't verbally respond, which was normal for the tall, purple haired girl. She simply turned and headed in the direction of home with their guests.
Midori watched them go for a moment, then sighed. She traveled down to the southern outskirts of Rosverine city. After passing by several dense buildings, her surroundings started transitioning to suburbs and smaller buildings, until they suddenly cut away to a large open field. There was mostly grass with a few flowers poking out here and there. Midori took her time, picking flowers as she walked to the place she had visited so many times before.
The sun had nearly set by the time she reached the center of the massive grassy plain. Among the grass there seemed to be remnants of what was once a house, embedded in the earth. She stopped at a set of three stones, each of which she and Runa had set themselves. Midori began to speak aloud as if talking to old friends, although no one was actually there to hear her.
"Hey you guys, long time no see!" she began. "It's such a lovely evening, don't you agree?" The even layer of grass blew gently in the warm breeze. It had grown around the well-kept stones quite nicely. "I'm sorry for not visiting in a while, we've had two lovely guests staying with us." She gazed at one stone in particular, the third one. "I think you would get along with them as well. They're very sweet, and good company."
Midori grew quiet again and then sat down onto the soft grass. The sun had gone down and the breeze grew colder and stronger. It was now blowing through her long green hair.
"The witches have been fewer though, so I don't know how long we can let them stay with us. They're both magical girls like us. Therefore, they need grief seeds like we do," she realized she had misspoke, and corrected herself, "erm, did."
Midori sighed, and a tear quietly rolled down her cheek. The stars began to appear in the clear sky above her, and cicadas started to sing their nightly summer song. She allowed the chilled wind to blow over her and she smiled to herself, as if reminded of someone. She wiped a tear off of her cheek and looked back at the stones, which almost seemed to be waiting patiently for her to continue.
