Midori stared at her friend in disbelief. It couldn't be true... could it? She had been taught that it was impossible for a magical girl to change back to a human. But here, in front of her, stood her friend—the most powerful and respectable magical girl she had ever met—who now seemed more frail somehow.
Midori took a few steps closer. "A- are you sure? Have you t- tried summoning a weapon or transforming into your magical outfit?"
Runa's expression hardened, and she nodded.
So many thoughts swirled around in Midori's mind; thoughts about what had happened, what would happen next, and why. Forgetting breakfast completely, she sat back down on Runa's bed. There weren't exactly any chairs in the room, after all.
"How... how did this happen?" Midori asked Runa, hoping this wasn't a total mystery.
Runa stared back out the window. "I do not know," she replied, almost irritated. Her fear now seemed to be replaced with anger. Midori wasn't used to all of these emotions coming from the normally stoic girl.
"What do we do now...?" The sinking feeling Midori felt grew worse. She realised that they both depended on Runa's special magic for so many important things: going to school, getting food, and-
"We need to leave."
"What?" Midori responded, surprised at such a sudden suggestion.
Runa turned to look at Midori once more. "Without magic, we can not live in this city," Runa elaborated.
Midori reached for some kind of hope. "W- we can think of something, right? We can get jobs!"
"But we are both missing persons," Runa contradicted. "I cannot trick anyone anymore. I cannot change legal papers like I did for school, or make either of us appear as someone we are not."
Midori's heart sank deeper. 'I'll have to leave the city I've grown to love, my poor worried parents, and...' she thought back to the previous night when she had visited her friends' memorials. She began to tear up, scared of what the future would hold for the two of them.
Runa was incapable of knowing how to comfort her friend, so instead she reminded Midori of the food that awaited them both. "What kind of breakfast did you make?" she asked, trying to bring her voice back to its soft and unexpressive self.
Midori wiped her tears. "Omelettes and toast. Would you like some?"
Runa simply nodded, and they both went to the small dining table to eat.

"Call again!" A smaller girl with short, blue hair banged her fist against the table, startling the many other board members in the room. A girl on the phone followed orders as the tempered girl continued to rant. "If we don't get her consent within the next three days, I say we branch off! We cannot put this off any longer. Our last standing magical girls are homeless in areas we have no control over. They are risking their lives for the safety of humanity, yet humanity doesn't care!" Frustrated, she threw her body into a large swivel chair at the head of the room.
