A tiny, high pitched sneeze came from behind Midori. Upon turning around, the small brunette girl flickered her eyelids open, before sneezing a second time. When her eyes finally focused after sitting up, she looked at Midori, and a strange expression flooded the child's face. It was a mix of surprise yet total fear and anxiety.
Midori stared at her in awe. "Y— you're alive? I'm so relieved..." she breathed.
The young girl looked mortified as a knock came from the door. Her breathing began to get heavy as her throat tightened.
Midori stood. "Hush now," she said gently. "I'll go check and make sure it's no one scary." She walked over to a window and gently pulled the curtain just enough for her to peer outside with one eye. She was only able to get a glimpse of three girls standing on the doorstep before the child pulled her away from the window. The girl continued to indicate that the door was bad news by shaking her head.
"Well... alright. I won't answer it," Midori assured the girl. "This isn't even my home anyway. The homeowners aren't home yet, so I probably shouldn't answer with them gone." She looked over the timid girl once more. "Are you feeling alright?"
The girl held her gem close to her chest with her eyes tightly closed. She held her breath until she knew the girls had left. She then sighed and nodded at Midori, not making eye contact. Her hair was messed up, falling out of the double braids that were tightly held together by two small bows.
"Here, would you like some help with your hair?" Midori asked as she reached over to get a brush from her bag.
The girl's eyes glistened as she looked up at Midori with a torn expression. She then looked down at Midori's ring. The gem was in perfect condition, not one flaw to be found. Tears began to form in her eyes as she looked up at the green-haired girl again. She jumped up to hug the taller girl with silent happiness smearing across her face.
Midori wasn't sure how to react. She was glad that the younger girl was safe, but she was confused why she had suddenly received a hug. However, she couldn't help but smile back. After being so worried about her, Midori was relieved that the child seemed happy, even if she didn't know why.
The girl suddenly pulled away and stopped smiling, as if she had remembered to do something. She shook her head in response to Midori's question and then looked blankly at the floor for a moment. She then looked up at Midori and nodded her head in a manner as if to say "thank you" before walking towards the door. She didn't quite stumble, but her walking pattern seemed to be off as she held her rumbling stomach.
"Wait, please don't go!" Midori didn't want the girl to leave, partly because she didn't seem to be feeling better completely. "If you're hungry, then please stay with us. We'll be eating as soon as the others get back."
The girl looked back at Midori, almost drooling. She shook her head, trying to convince herself that she was doing the right thing and continued to the door.
Midori instantly ran and stood between the girl and the door. "Please stay! I—I really don't think it's a good idea for you to leave."
The young brunette looked at Midori, confused why she might be upset. She thought for a moment, staring at the ground again, and shook her head with a concerned expression. She pointed to the door, insisting she needed to leave.
