Jealous Jason

Chapter 7

Jason P.O.V.

Piper walks into Bunker 9, with me close behind. We have to recruit Leo. Leo... It was pretty shocking when he died. But I know the Trio will be complete. Of course Leo will join us.

We were Hera's first play, the first questing group. We are far superior to any other trio. Duh.

Leo is building something that I can only hope is a chair, but I have the strangest feeling that it's a motorcycle. Leo alone? That's fine. Leo with Percy? That's like locking two deranged divas in the same broom closet. Leo with a motorcycle? That's... not. Well, one way to explain it would be BOOM.

"Hi, Leo!" Piper greets him cheerfully. "Did you hear what happened?"

Leo scratches his neck awkwardly. "My moped almost self-combusted?"

"No!" I say, kind of loudly. I open my mouth to lay out the day's events, but Piper starts talking first.

"Leo, what do you think about Percy?" Piper asks sweetly.

"He's cool. If I'm being honest, it's annoying how he's so great, but it's not like Jason over here is much better. But he's cool." Leo repeats.

"He's not so great." I say. Leo gestures for me to continue. "Have you ever thought about how so many of his friends die? I know more people than him, and less of my friends have died. I don't want to die yet, and you already did. Percy is careless and reckless. That probably caused all his 'accidents'."

Leo stares at me. "Okay?"

Piper cuts in. "And we don't think Percy is so great. Think about it. Everyone says he did all that great stuff, but did he? Did he really? There's only about five 'witnesses' left from the second titan war. Apparently all the others died. Maybe he told them to say all that stuff he did for a price. What if he's a fraud? It makes perfect sense. He, intentionally or unintentionally,  got people during the second titan war. There were few survivors to begin with, but Greek demigods don't grow old. Most of the survivors died. And now he covers up what actually happened."

Leo shakes his head. "And what evidence do you have? Look, man, I'm not trying to argue, but what if those people died because of what you just said-- that Greek demigods don't grow old?"

"But that's the thing." I say. "Demigods acquainted with Percy are much more likely to die than ones he doesn't know, or ones he doesn't interact with."

Leo looks at me. "Isn't that because Percy went on lots of dangerous quests with people? They knew the risks."

"Percy should have just gone on his quests alone, if he had to do dangerous things." I argue back. "There's no need to put other people at risk."

Leo turns around. I can tell he's thinking. Finally he turns back to face us.

"You know what? You might be right. Like that one time when he snuck away, not to save Artemis, but to rescue Annabeth. If that quest is even true, he endangered people by putting his goal first. The goal was to rescue Artemis. Period. If he wanted to rescue Annabeth he should have gone off alone. Without him along, Bianca and Zoë wouldn't have died." Leo finishes.

"Exactly!" Piper exclaims. She hugs Leo. "So, does this mean you're on our side?"

Loe scratches the back of his head. "What are these sides for?"

"It means you think I'm better than Percy." I explain.

"Okay, okay." Leo says. "Then I'm on your side. I'm not sure I totally agree with you, but I get where you're coming from. You're my best friend, Jason. Of course I'm on your side."

Piper smiles. "I knew we could count on you, Leo."

I nod, then say to Piper, "We should tell him what just happened."

"Yeah, we should." Piper agrees. "So, Leo, you probably didn't hear, but Jason challenged Percy to a duel last night, and today they dueled and Percy won, but-"

Piper is cut off by an anxious Leo. "That was a fluke, right?"

"Definitely." I say, and Piper nods.

"Alright, now that Percy has been officially kicked off team Leo, lemme work on my Leo Moped II." Leo exclaims.

"What happened to the I?" Piper asks carefully.

Leo grins at her. "Are you sure you want to know?"

Piper backs away. "On second thought, no. Jason, let's go." She pulls on my arm and I leave Bunker 9 with her.

We're the original Trio. And we're unstoppable. Anyone else doesn't even stand a chance.
