Yeonjun almost jumped away at the sudden voice next to his ear. He turned around, fist up in defence.
"Woah, okay okay, calm down!" The culprit raised his hands to surrender.
"Soobin?" Yeonjun recognized the cute face and purple hair. Even in the dark, Soobin still shined. He dropped his defense.
"What are you doing out in the night like this?" Soobin asked, lowering his two palms as well.
"I was bored so I took a walk," Yeonjun explained briefly, "I could ask the same for you? You seem suspicious."
Soobin chuckled. Eh, more like giggled. "You're the stranger around here, Yeonjun-ssi. No one would suspect me walking around in my own hometown."
Yeonjun wanted to respond, but he figured what the boranette said made complete sense.
"So, what are you doing?" Yeonjun asked in a more relaxed tone.
Without warning, Soobin pulled the azurette towards a park bench. He let go, signaling Yeonjun to sit beside him. Yeonjun obeyed, of course.
Yeonjun watched as the taller male pointed upwards. Yeonjun's gaze followed, gaping at the starlit sky. "Woah," he breathed.
"Cool right? Only when I turn off all the lampposts could I see this beauty of a sky."
Yeonjun dropped his gaze towards Soobin. "Why is that?" He asked, earning a look from the other.
"Because they only shine the brightest when the world turned dark."
Yeonjun raised a brow. "Don't they always shine the same way?"
Soobin smiled, turning his gaze upward. "Yes, of course they do, butㅡ ugh, okay listenㅡ"
"ㅡfor example we have a torch. If you turn it on at midday, it wouldn't be much of a difference, but if you turn it on at midnight, it could help guide your way through the darkness."
Yeonjun nodded at the metaphor. "So, the stars act the same?"
"Yep, that's why I like it dark," Soobin dropped his gaze with a goofy smile.
"But, why? The stars aren't much of a difference in a cold dark night. Aren't you, like, scared?"
Soobin giggled again. "They remind me of my mother."
Yeonjun stared at the boranette, demanding an explanation. He always have viewed darkness as a danger zone. He always needed to act tougher than how he really was. The alleys, the dark rooms, the chaos at night, he always had to act numb.
"She always said that even in the darkest times of your life, there would always be that tiny bit of light you call hope," Soobin looked up again, his eyes lost in the chain of constellations.
Yeonjun chuckled darkly. "Sounds ridiculous to me."
"Don't say that," Soobin frowned at him. "Maybe you just... haven't found your own light source yet?"
Yeonjun dropped his gaze to the dirt path below them.
A light source?
He laughed sarcastically. Who in the right mind would help a useless person like me?
"What are you laughing at?" Yeonjun turned towards the pouting Soobin. The azurette chuckled, this time more softly. "Didn't I sound cool?" Soobin tilted his head.
"You did."
That was a lie.
"Have you packed for tomorrow? It would be a long journey."
Soobin jumped up from his bench. "Oh right, I haven't even done a thing! Uh, I'll get going now. Bye, Yeonjun-ssi!"
Soobin ran off, leaving Yeonjun on the bench. The older male looked up again. My own light source, huh?
He shook his head, lowering it down again while closing his eyes.
Don't you dare start hoping, Yeonjun.
