After the war and Otto Frank’s return, Miep gave in her notice that she would leave Opekta and become a housewife. It really was hard, but I made enough to support and feed us all. 1946 was absolutely fine, no trouble. In May 1947, a friend of mine passed away and his widower was looking for people to rent the apartment while she moved away. We moved into the 3-bed apartment at Jekerstraat 65, which was a lot better fitting for us all. We kept a 16 year old tenant in the 3rd bedroom we had, and he paid us 3 guilders a week in rent. The rest of 1947 went absolutely fine. We had news and confirmation of Anne & Margot’s death, along with Edith’s death.

We evicted our tenant, now 19 years old, in April 1950 while Miep was pregnant with our only son. Paul was born in July 1950, and he now had his own room in our apartment. It was a lot better, and we enjoyed life in the apartment. Otto left in 1953 and moved in with his mother in Basel in Switzerland. We still live on the Jekerstraat today, in 1990.
