Chapter 1
A young girl, about the age of four, sits in her play area in the back area of the adoption centre.
A man, middle aged, walks over and smiles sickly.
"This one. She is perfect."
This place has been known to offer children to those without proper inspection, and this situation was no different. The doe eyed (H/C) haired girl looked up at him with caution, but when he extended his clammy hand out to hers, she took it and was practically dragged from her position on the dreary, beige mat.
Her eyes blink open to the sight of her curtain flowing gently away from the window and she lets out a breath she had been holding in. Sitting up, she stretched out her arms and tries to rub off the dirt and grime she had felt after remembering that day. A glance at the clock tells her it's only 4:40 in the morning. This had been her routine. Her mind played tricks on her as soon as the lights went out, causing bouts of insomnia. A scorching pain fills her body, as a multi-colored shine emits from her skin. Biting her lip, she tries to hold in the scream, but allows a low groan to escape. The feeling and glow leaves and allows her to pant heavily.
This is Y/N. She used to be Y/N Something-Something, then Y/N Eklund, and now Y/N Stark.
Being raised by Tony Stark, she was then in turn treated like a family member when the rest came into the picture last year.
Reminiscing on her year spent at the tower, she smiles. Her bare feet touch the cold hard-wood flooring as she slides off the bed to leave the dark prison of her room. Opening the door slowly, she tip-toes to the elevator and presses the button to her dad's lab. After a short ride, the doors open to Tony working hard at one of the many prototypes of his suit. His brown eyes shoot up at the sound and he sets down his tools. "Another sleepless night? Maybe you aren't adopted after all, you sure act like me."
"Or you're just desperately trying to cling to the fact that I'm 'sort of' like you," She smirked and crossed her (S/C) arms across her chest, creating a small area of warmth in the cold lab. Scoffing, Tony mirrored her stance and chuckled lightly. "I hope you got a little sleep at least, we have a busy agenda today. Point Break is coming back for a while to cool down apparently. And he requested to bring a friend."
Y/N's eyes lit up in excitement. Things are boring here in the tower for her, but when her close friend and brother figure, Thor, comes home from his adventures throughout space she's brought into a world of light for a small moment. "I should go to the store for some extra snacks then I guess. Put my drivers license to use for once," She spoke lightly. Tony turned with a small chuckle and set his hands on the workbench before speaking. "Be safe, and grab some energy drinks while you're at it."
Instinctively, her eyes rolled to the top of her lids.
Yeah, staying up later. That's exactly what we need.
Shaking her head, she slipped on some shoes. Not bothering with changing her pajama pants, she got in the elevator and headed down to the garage and hopped in a random car. (Y/N) sped off to a close, 24/7 convenience store.
"Are you kidding me? They're always out of the pink ones." (Y/N) grumbled to herself as she stared into the cold case. The fluorescent lights made a dull humming sound, and other than her annoyed voice, all you could hear was the cashier's phone as it played a baseball game from yesterday. Which both sounded immensely loud. Her senses were bouncing off the walls of her head. With a resounding sigh, she grabbed a white monster energy and 3 red bulls, for Tony.
"Hi, this'll be it." The girl's tone indicated she did not want to be here longer than necessary. When the cashier didn't answer however, she knocked on the glass separating them, catching his attention. Throwing him a confused look, she nudged her items closer. The man simply looked at her blankly as he leaned back in his chair.
"What?" He asked plainly, as he popped his gum.
" Uhm, are you gonna... ring me up...?"
"I don't know."
"Don't you work here?"
He shrugged and looked back at his phone.
(Y/N)'s head turned to the side in confusion. After moments of silence, she laid a twenty dollar bill on the counter and took the drinks with her. The cashier, whose name was learned to be Mark, didn't bat an eye, instead choosing to focus on his phone rather than the girl who could have easily stolen from him.
The drive back to the tower was quick. The streets were still quite empty as this side of the world began to wake. Well, as empty as New York City could get.
Jarvis was there to greet her as she made the familiar ride to Tony's lab, once again.
"Sparky! You get the goods?" He was fast to run to you and grab his drinks, cracking one open and drinking some. A laugh escaped her mouth because of his enthusiasm. She swiftly opened her own drink and sipped. After hopping onto a clear space upon one of many tables, she lifted her can to the air, and spoke. "To another sleepless night, in the city that never sleeps." Tony clinked the side of his drink to hers and mumbled a quick 'Amen' in response.
