(TW//MENTIONS OF DEATH)

~~

I put on a bulletproof vest and yanked on my shoulder holsters, buckling them in the back. I checked both of my pistols. Once doing so, I tended to one of them, oiling it, and reassembling it. I made sure the sight wasn't off. Taking out the bullet, I pulled the trigger and made sure that it worked. Every movement was precise, as if my mind was away from my body. As I was getting ready, it was the thoughts of how I'd felt, how I'd wanted to live, and everything that I'd sought to be. It was all lost in the past, as I crumbled the piece of paper in my hands.

I wrapped my wrists in bands with spare magazines and pulled up the sleeves of my kevlar-woven coat. I stuffed my pockets with grenades and spare magazines. I hesitated, thinking that I'd need bandages and painkillers. However, I shook my head, knowing I didn't need them. I found a box of cigarettes, an old box that I eventually remember taking from (Y/N). I reached for a lighter and lit the cigarette, taking a huff of it. " Goodnight, Kousuke," I looked around the empty room, nothing had changed, but there was no one there," Goodnight Katsumi. Goodnight, Yuu. Goodnight, Shinji, Goodnight, Sakura." I watched as the pale smoke rose from the tip.

" Sleep well. I'll avenge you."

Holding the cigarette in my fingers, I walked down the stairs and out the door.

" Odasaku!"

I stopped, hearing two familiar voices say my name in sync. It was the moment that I was leaving the restaurant. I turned around to the two, their faces with worried expressions on their faces. (Y/N)'s arm was almost gripping onto Dazai's with worry. " Dazai, (Y/N)? What's wrong?" " Odasaku, I know what you're thinking," (Y/N) spoke up, taking a step towards me," but don't. Doing that isn't going to-" " Isn't going to bring the kids back?," I asked. Lost for words, she didn't say anything more. " I already know where they are," I spoke from the silence and stepped past them. I handed Dazai the map," They're gathering their troops all in one spot. I'm not sure the mafia can defeat them even if we mobilize all our men." " That won't be necessary," I sighed.

It started to rain. " Listen Odasaku. The boss had a secret meeting a few hours ago. I wasn't even informed about what was going on, but I know that Ango was the mediator with the Special Operations Divison. I know it has to do with Mimic, but if we could find something-"

" Something..?," I looked back at Dazai," There isn't anything, Dazai. It's over. Everything. Whatever else happens now is meaningless, just like what I'm about to do. Am I wrong?"

" Odasaku," Dazai spoke softly to me for once," Forgive me for the odd wording, but-don't go. Find something else to rely on. Expect good things to happen from here on out. There's gotta be something... Hey, Odasaku, do you know why I joined the Mafia?"

I stared at him. Sure, we'd known each other for a long time, but I never brought up a question like that. " I joined because of an expectation I had. I thought that maybe if I was so close to violence and death, maybe I'd be able to see the nature of humankind up close. I thought... I'd find something. Maybe a reason to live."

" I wanted to be a novelist," I said," I thought I wouldn't deserve such a life if I killed someone during a mission. That's why I never killed anyone, but now it's in the past. I only have one thing I want to know."

"... and maybe your reason to live is right next to you, you're just not looking in the right direction."

Those were my last words before leaving. Dazai called out my name again, but I just kept on walking.

On a private boat, stood three figures. Two of them sat across from each other and one stood by one's side. Chief Taneda, a high rank for the Special Operations Division sat across from Mori Ougai, the Port Mafia don. Ango Sakaguchi, was the organizer of the meeting stood my Taneda's side with an unsettled expression landing on his face. " Ango it's been a while. Thanks for inviting me. How have you been, now that you're at your real job?" Ango didn't respond to Mori's question. " I'd appreciate it if you don't harass our junior staff.," Taneda retorted, getting Mori off his case.
