Liz's pov....
"Lizzie!" came my best friend, Dee's voice from my laptop screen.
"Dee!!!" I exclaimed just as excited. It had been a week since we last had a video call and it was the longest we had stayed without contact. I didn't blame her though. Dee had been married for two years now and was a mother of four amazing beautiful kids. So she barely had time to talk but at least we had a video chat every two days, plus with our other best friends Hamida and Gina. Dee's sister in law joined in from time to time when she wasn't busy with her Cafe back in Milan. Two years ago, Dee got a job to be a nanny. Her job was to take care of two amazing kids, Zoe and Zack who had both lost their mum at a young age. Their dad, Alex was a billionaire who was too busy taking over the world to take care of them. Well, as cliche as it may be, their chemistry was off the charts, they slept together and she ended up pregnant with his twins. A few months later she melted the ice around Alex's heart and they ended getting married. Well actually she went into labor on the day of their wedding but they got married two months later.
Initially, it was just Dee and me since high school. We both ended up going to Germany to study international relations. We met Hamida while in Germany, where she was doing petroleum engineering and she was left with one more year in school. She was Tanzanian and because we came from the same region, we instantly became friends. We were now roommates after her relationship ended and since Dee who was my roommate wasn't there anymore, I figured it was the best option for the two of us.
Dee met Gina when they both applied for the same position of being a nanny and had been friends with us since. Alessa, Alex's sister also became a close friend. She had been friends with Dee before but we met during Cara, her sister's supposed wedding (which didn't happen, and that's a story for another day).Although I could be an eccentric person, I was very shy so I rarely got out much. I was only the outgoing crazy type around people I knew. Actually if it wasn't for Dee, I don't think I'd have gotten out of that shell.
You see, I'm an only child and although I had cousins who lived with us from time to time, I was mostly alone for most of my childhood. My father had passed away when I was thirteen and since then it had been me and my mom.
I was the kind of person that got attached to those close to me. Before I went to high school which was a boarding school, I was very attached to my mum. Then I met Dee and we instantly clicked and had been inseparable ever since. Then she moved when she got married and although I miss her dearly, I still had my other friends so I wasn't too badly affected by her move.
"Well, how have you been? Everything great on your end?" I asked.
"Well, your god children are causing a racus but that ain't new. Zoe and Zack went to school just a while ago. Alex went to work so it's just me and the terrible two." she said and I could hear the twins causing babbling animately in the background.
"Aaah I miss those two. I'll try and come visit them during the summer, before I head home." I told her.
"Just let me know when so I can send the jet. How about you? How are you?" She asked.
"Well, same old same old. Still looking for a job and I'm yet to be successful." I told her. I've been sending my CV to different companies for the last year and I haven't gotten word back. I did get two interviews but none of them were successful. Dee had wanted to ask Alex to help me but I wasn't one to have things handed to her. Besides, she already helped me a couple of times these past few months with rent money and upkeep. I was thinking of going back home if I didn't get a call back.
"Well, Alex told me about this shipping company in Australia that is looking for a personal assistant. I know it's not what you were looking for but it could help boost you in the meantime. Plus, it's a multinational company so you'll be able to make some connections here and there or even put your diplomacy skills to use. " she said.
" Dee... You know I.... "
" I won't take no for an answer. Just think it over. I know you don't want me to help you but you've reached the breaking point. And I wouldn't feel right knowing I can help and did nothing. " she interjected.
" Dee you know you've done plenty for me. Especially these past few months. " I told her.
" You remember that swahili saying that our principal back in high school used to tell us? Ya kupea mtu jembe akajilimie badala ya kumpa chakula kila saa. Nina uwezo wa kukupea jembe. Sasa ni wewe ukajitafutie chakula. Wacha kufikiria sana. (Translation :To give someone means to get their own food instead of giving them food all the time. I have the capability to give you the means you look for your own success. It's up to you now to decide. Don't think too much into it.)
