CHAPTER TWO :THE INTERVIEW

"Aaah Fuck!" I exclaimed once I checked my phone and saw that I had only thirty minutes to prepare myself for the interview. In a hurry, I entangled myself with my duvet and ended up falling with a thud on the floor.
I rushed to get up, massaging the areas on my body that I had hit when I fell, not even bothering to pick my duvet up as I rushed to take my towel and head to the bathroom. Knowing Mida she was probably in school studying for her end of semester exams.
I took the quickest shower, brushing my teeth while struggling to scrub my body.

Luckily, I had already picked an official blouse to wear and decided to wear my pink pajama pants because it was a zoom interview, chances of them seeing my pants would be next to nil.

Once I was dressed, I turned to tame my 4c unruly kinky curls, wishing they would for once cooperate and once it was tied up in a decent bun, I applied my dark red matte lipstick . Gina had gifted it to me for my last birthday. It was the only make up I owned.

Putting on my glasses, I took my phone and checked the time, seeing that I had ten minutes left. As I walked to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea, I checked my messages, noting that I had a voice note on my whatsapp from Dee.
"Hey love. Just wanted to wish you all the best. Though knowing you, you'll nail it. After all you are one of the smartest people I know. So do your thing. Love you and tell me what happened after you are done." she said and I instantly smiled, feeling my anxiety drop a bit.
On the kitchen counter, Mida had left two cupcakes on a plate and a note saying," Morning, left you some Goodluck cupcakes. Wishing you all the best. "
I said a silent thank you, biting into the fluffy pineapple flavored goodness then sipped my tea. After, I placed the dishes on the sink, making a mental note to make an amazing thank you dinner for Mida, then went to set up for the interview.

After I had typed in the password and meeting ID I only waited a minute before my laptop screen was filled with the face of a middle aged beautiful African woman.
"Just give me a minute miss Mbula, to set everything up before we begin." She said.
"Of course take your time." I replied with a smile. She looked like a pleasant woman if the laugh wrinkles on the corner of her eyes were anything to go by. And from her accent she was British.
"Okay. We can begin. Good morning. I'm Edna Smiths the HR executive for Black shipping company. I'll be conducting your interview."
"Nice to meet you. I hope it's not too late there."
"OH no. It's only noon. Anyway, let's get started. I looked at your cv and I have to say even though you have no experience, its pretty impressive."
She commended me and I felt proud for putting effort in my studies.
"Thank you for the kind words."
"So. That being said, I have only one question. How soon can you come to Australia?" she asked
"Well, as soon as possible."
"Great. I think you are capable of handling the job. I do however need to see what you can do practically so you'll be on probation for a month. The job is your if you want it." she said with a smile.
"Wow! I was honestly expecting more. Can I ask, why me? I mean I know I applied for the job but why are you giving it to me on a silver platter?"
"Well, amongst all our candidates you are by far the best qualified for the job. And I can tell you are going to be great at the job. I'm good at reading people. It's one of the reasons I'm the best HR executive." She finished with a wink.
I sat there waiting for her to tell me she was kidding and that we were about to begin the real interview but the longer I looked at her on the screen the more I knew she was actually serious. I had the freaking job. All I had to do was say yes. But was it really as easy as this?
"Hello? Miss Mbula?" she asked through the screen, breaking through my thoughts.
"Yes. Sorry. I was just thinking about how this is all good to be true." I replied honestly.
"Sweetie, you are smart to be weary. It means you have a sixth sense and that you aren't naive. But sometimes good things just happen to good people. But I'll understand if you don't want the job." She said.
"I'd be a fool to say no." I replied and she instantly released a sigh, adding to my anxiety and doubts.
" Oh thank God. I'm really glad you've taken the job. I will be sending you all the information once we are done with this interview. Is two weeks sufficient time for you to get your affairs in order and report to work?"
"Yes. That will be okay." I replied.
"Great! Well, we will be looking forward to meeting you. Welcome aboard the black team. Damn that sounded better and less racist in my head..." she said, mumbling the last part, which made me laugh.
"Well, you are not to blame for the poor choice made by the owners of the company." I assured her.
"That's true. Anyway, do have a good day miss mbula. If you don't mind, I'd like to end this interview, unless of course you have any questions?" she asked.
"I have none at the moment." I replied sincerely.
"Great. I'll be sending you all you need to know through the email address listed in your cv. In case you have any questions, you can reach me through the email address I'll be using to send you the email. See you soon." she said
"Good bye and good day." I replied just before she ended the meeting.

Well that went well. I thought to myself. I however couldn't shake the feeling that it went a little too well. And my sixth sense was tingling. But I decided to put it aside and brushed it off as my anxiety acting up.

Smiling, I sent a text on the whatsapp group we were all in, telling everyone that I got the job. Immediately my phone buzzed signaling a new message in the group.

Lessa: OMGGGGGGGG!!!! Congratulations!!! Oh shit! I just scared off a customer when I screamed😂

Me: Thank you. And I'm sorry you lost a customer.

Lessa:Meh.... Any human freaked out by public display of emotion isn't worth crying over. If I'd have taken his money I'd probably turn into a grump like him.

Me: 😂😂😂😂

Dee:DID YOU JUST SAY THAT YOU GOT THE JOB!!!!!! YEEEEEEESSSSSSSSS!!!! *HAPPY DANCE* *Also, silent scream and slow dance cause I don't want to wake the terrible two up* I knew you could do it! Congratulations love!!!

Me: 😂😂😂😂 thanks love.

Gina: Awwww! Congratulations girl. I'm so happy for you.

Me:Thanks G 😘

Mida: Congrats sweetie. I see my cupcakes worked!!! 😂

Me:They definitely played a role.

Gina: I suggest we all have a zoom party!!!

Lessa:How will that work? 🤔

Gina: Basically, we all log in and take shots. 🤷‍♀️

Me: Issavibe then. 💃💃💃

Dee: I can handle the music since I'll be home alone. My uncle and aunt took the twins and Zack. Zoe is at a sleepover at my sister's. So it's just me an Alex this weekend.

Gina: Great. What about Alex?

Dee: He'll understand that I'm having a girls night out.

Me: Don't make any more babies please.

Dee:Highly unlikely.

Mida: I'm coming over with the booze Liz.
Liz: Thanks guys. I don't know what I would do without you people. So I'm going out for a bit to get groceries Ill be back in a bit.

Mida: Please pass by the turk shop, we need spices.

Me:Sure thing sweets. Talk later bitches.

..........

I logged off for a bit, so I could get ready to leave. I decided to change into some comfy black sweat pants and paired it up with a white tank top, white vans and a blue jeans jacket. I decided to not rub the matte off and since my head was feeling a bit constricted I decided to let my hair breath and removed the bun, leaving my kinky curls free.

I couldn't wait for our girls night out. It was long overdue.....but first, a thank you dinner for Mida would have to be first on the list.
