CHAPTER 1

“Your latte with a slice of cheesecake, ma’am. That will be 5 dollars,” I say as I handed the elderly woman her tray. She fumbled with her purse, taking out the cash. She handed me the money and I returned her change.

“Have a good day, ma'am,” I say to her with a smile on my face. The old woman smiled back at me, the corners of her eyes crinkling.

The cafe I worked in is called Coffee & Stuff. It’s not as extravagant as Starbucks but it promised a cosy atmosphere to its customers. The windows allowed light to stream in abundantly, giving a sort of warm glow to the cafe during the afternoons. The furnishing was simple with a few couches here and there. Music flowed through the room and today, it was my day to pick the music playlist.

The owner of the cafe, a middle aged woman named Mrs Walker, (Don’t tell her I said that. She insists I call her Jane.) is a cheerful person. Whenever she was around in the cafe, it was as if the whole place just lit up even brighter, if that were possible. She was always going around making sure the customers felt welcomed as well as always checking on her employees to make sure we had no problems, be it with work or problems of our own.

I looked up at the clock and saw that I only have another ten minutes before my shift ends and Parker took over. The shop that was bustling with customers in the morning was now rather quiet as it was already past breakfast time. I saw Parker enter the premises. He gave me a slight nod with a friendly smile, letting me know that he would take over. I entered the employees’ room, taking off my blue apron and hanging it onto the rack. I pulled on a Michigan University hoodie that I may or may not have stolen from my older brother, Tyler, when he came back from University for Christmas. I grabbed my bag filled with books and walked out of the cafe after saying goodbye to Parker and Jane.

I walked to the bus stop with my earphones plugged into my ears. I was scrolling through my phone, checking emails, when suddenly I was falling. My phone went flying in the air before crashing  into tiny pieces. I landed on someone but I didn’t get to find out who it was as a sharp pain pierced my ankle. I gasped when I realized I was in some pretty deep shit because the pain was unbearable.

“Shit! I am so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention while walking,” a deep voice said. I guess I landed on a man then. I felt him try to get up and pull me up as well but the moment he let go of my arm, I wobbled and fell again, making me hiss in pain.

The man, who seemed to be somewhere around my age, if not slightly older, looked at me with wide eyes. He seemed to be in confusion whether I had injured myself. He crouched down to my level and brushed my ankle which was now turning into a rather ugly blue black color. I shuddered under his simple touch. Guilt flashed in his eyes as he examined my bruise.

“Can you walk?” he asked. I stare at him, waiting for him to answer the question himself. He was waiting on me to answer. I sighed. How clueless could this man get.
