CHAPTER 2
My eyes fluttered open and I squinted due to the amount of bright light streaming in from the window. I felt rather confused at first, waking up in a white room. Memories flooded back to me and I recalled that I was brought into a hospital. I tried sitting up which proved to be a challenge because I felt rather stiff.
“Here, let me help you,” a voice said.
I tilt my head to the side and I see the man the doctor had referred as Mr Price. His hazel brown black hair looked like a mess on top of his head as though he had been running his hands through them. He had a 5 o’clock shadow and he had bags under his eyes. His silk tie was hanging loosely around his neck and his coat was unbuttoned. Despite his rather disheveled appearance, he was quite the sight with his piercing blue eyes and strong jawline. He was absolutely gorgeous even though it looked like he wasn’t trying.
“Were you here the whole time? How long have I been here?” I ask, my throat feeling rather dry.
He grabbed a glass and poured some water into it. He walked towards me and offered me the glass of water. I took it from him, grateful as the liquid quenched my thirst. As I drank, he replied.
“Yes, I have. You have been here since last night. You fainted and then fell asleep. You could have told me you were afraid of needles. How are you feeling?”
“I’m sorry if I ruined any of your plans but thank you for looking after me, Mr Price. Um, yeah, I kind of have a phobia of needles. I’m feeling much better. Just a little bit numb near the ankle. Did the hospital by any chance contact my family?”
“No, it’s no problem. Glad I could be of help. I am terribly sorry that I put you in this situation. Yes, they just gave them a call. Sorry for the delay. They had some trouble searching for your contact details. They should be picking you up later this afternoon. And please, call me Cameron.”
“Stop apologizing. It’s not your fault, Cameron. It was an accident,” I say, patting his hand. He gave me a weak smile but there was a hint of guilt in it.
After the doctors had finished checking my ankle, Cameron excused himself, saying he had a meeting to attend. He seemed rather hesitant to leave for it but I urged him to go. God knows I don’t need him to miss something important when I am fine. My parents didn’t come to pick me up as they were both at work. Instead, I got one of the biggest surprises in my life.
There was a knock on my hospital room door. I told them to come in, figuring it was just one of the nurses or perhaps even my parents. But as the door opened and a face that was grinning widely came in, I let out a shriek. If I could run and jump onto him, I would. Tyler ran towards me and wrapped his arms around me in a hug. A couple of nurses ran into my room, probably due to that little shriek I gave earlier. I smiled sheepishly at them when they realized there was no emergency. Tyler let out a howl of laughter when he saw the guilty look on my face. I punched his arm and he quickly sobered up from his fit of laughter.
“I missed you, baby sis,” Tyler said as he kissed my forehead.
“I missed you too! How come I didn’t even know you were back from University?” I ask, hugging him.
“I wanted to surprise you but it looks like you gave me a huge surprise too. How on earth did you sprain your ankle?”
“Haha...you see...I uh may have not been paying attention while walking and I kind bumped into this person and we both fell and then viola! My ankle was injured.”
“Clumsy as always, I see. Do I need to beat the shit out of this guy? Was he a jerk about it?”
“Mom and dad didn’t tell you? He brought me here and stayed here the entire night. So, no. No need for you to go all ninja on the guy.”
“Hmm, he stayed here? Well, he better not have tried anything on you,: my brother said, being his usual protective self.
“Oh my God, no, Tyler! It was nothing like that. He just took care of me,” I said, feeling my cheeks heat up at my brother’s comment.
My brother handed me my crutches and he helped me carry my bag. He placed his beanie on my head, saying it was cold outside. We walked to the reception to settle the hospital bill. My brother told me to sit down on one of the waiting chairs as he went to pay off the bill. He came back rather soon, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. I raised my eyebrow at him, wondering why he seemed confused.
“I don’t understand. They said all your bills have been settled by the guy who brought you in,” my brother explained.
“Oh, wow. He shouldn’t have. I don’t even know how to contact him to thank him,” I said.
“Oh, well. That was rather nice of him. Come on, let’s go home, Char,” he said, grabbing my arm and steadying me. I hated using the crutches. It was difficult to coordinate my movements. Tyler, being the oh-so-loving brother, couldn’t stop laughing and teasing me about how slow I was as we walked towards the hospital exit. He decided not to make me suffer even more by offering to go and get the car and drive to the entrance to pick me up.
By the time we reached home, it was already six in the evening. Our parents were already back from work. Dad shook his head at my clumsiness but hugged me and whispered in my ear to never scare them like that. I nodded my head at him although we both know that my clumsiness will never disappear. Mom hugged me so tight I thought I was going to dye from lack of blood circulation. Her eyes looked red as though she was crying, which she probably has been doing.
That night, we all had a proper dinner as a family after so long since we were all usually busy with our own agendas and Tyler was usually away for University. Mom had cooked my favorite meal. Roast chicken with potato and egg salad as well as some normal tossed leafy salad.
After dinner, we watched a horror movie that was playing on TV. Mom, Dad and Tyler were staring intently at the screen while they ate the popcorn. I sat in the corner, shutting my eyes tightly at all the gruesome scenes. I was never a big fan of horror movies whereas my family were.
I kept tossing in bed and my imaginations were playing tricks on me. Stupid horror movie, I cursed. I got out of bed and went out my room with a flashlight in hand. I knocked on Tyler’s room door. He opened it and he smirked at me.
“I knew you would come running to me after that horror movie. As usual since your first horror movie,” he teased.
I glared at him as he chuckled. However, it was true. I got so frightened after watching a horror movie that I would run to my brother in the middle of the night. It used to annoy him when we were kids but he got used to it so much so that he would be expecting me to come running to him after every horror movie.
My brother helped me elevate my leg with a pillow and went to get my blanket from my room. He came back and tucked me in.
“Goodnight, scaredy-cat,” my brother said, kissing me on the forehead and then went to the other side of the bed to sleep. I bet he was hoping I wouldn’t wake him up in the middle of the night because I heard noises and was suspicious that it was a ghost.
