My eyes flew open and I inhaled sharply. Something rough rubbed against my wrists, rope. I was tied to a tree at the edge of a small clearing.
A fire was going in the center, surrounded with four sleeping bags. A figure with red hair was sitting against a tree, breathing deeply and slowly. Appeared to have been put on night watch but fell asleep.
I remembered the fight between the Crows and another group of Specials, and the red haired man who held onto me as I died.
I glanced down at my chest where dried blood stained the front my black shirt, but there was no injury. Any fatal wounds heal over night.
My jacket and backpack laid next to me, but just far enough to where I couldn't reach them.
The rustling of leaves caught my attention and I brought my head up to see the man with red hair approaching me.
I shrank back but the bark of the tree dug into my skin. He had no weapons on him and he held his hands out to show that he meant no harm.
"Don't worry. I'm not going to hurt you." He said in a soft voice, the same voice that spoke to me as I passed out.
"Who are you?" I asked.
"My name is Kai, I'm a Special like you." He says lowering his hands, his mouth was a little askew when he talked.
"What's your power?" My eyes narrow and I scan him.
He was wearing a dark shirt under a black leather jacket with fold lines from years of use. Light jeans which looked like it had permanent dirt streaks on it, and combat boots.
Longish bright red hair covered some of his face, which had slight features that made him look younger than he is. Hazel eyes peeked out from under his hair, eyes that showed much pain and love over the years.
He crouched down to sit on his knees in front of me, he snapped his fingers and a small flame appeared in the palm of his hand.
"Fire manipulation." Kai states staring into the flame, his eyes reflecting the light from it.
Breathing in deeply he clenches his hand into a fist and snuffed out the fire. A trail of smoke wafted out from his palm.
"What about you?" He asked straightening his shoulders and wiping his hands on his dirty jeans. "What's your power Destiny?"
"Immortality. Although you probably already knew that." I state. "I figured, but Adriel said that all the Immortals vanished a while ago." Kai said.
"They did, but I received it by accident." I told him. "How?" He asked. "It's a long story for another time." I smile already becoming closer to the man that sat in front of me.
Kai chuckled, rocking back on his heels. "Okay then." "Can I ask a question?" I asked.
He nodded his head. "Why am I tied up?" I ask my wrists aching severely.
"When we brought you back to our camp you were out cold but we didn't want you to wake up in the middle of the night and leave, so we tied you to the tree."
I nodded, my lips tight and said: "Well, I am awake now. Can you undo the rope?"
Kai seemed to think for a second, glanced around and went to the back of the tree. The rope fell to the ground and I brought my hands to the front.
I rubbed my wrists which were red and bloody. Kai appeared and sat in front of me again.
"So tell me about your little group. How did you all meet?" I asked. He took a deep breath and started to talk.
"I ran from home when I was 17, my parents didn't accept my powers. After a year I met Oliver, whose power, sharp shooting, didn't affect any of his family. But he moved from Ireland to find a job for his family back home who were going broke." Kai started.
"Oliver is the one with the green highlights right?" He nodded. "What about the one girl with turquoise hair?" I asked.
"Kira? She came from a family of all Specials, but her sister works with the Senon and the Crows. In fact Kira worked with them for a little as a brainwashed subject but she escaped. Her sister has tattoos that she can control, Kira has telepathy, her father was able to control things with his mind, and her mother was a shapeshifter... " Kai's voice drifted off into the air.
My mind was trying to work out what Kai was saying. The girl with the turquoise hair, Kira, was a Crow. She could talk to people in their minds, and her sister works with the Crows. I remember a girl there with a bunch of tattoos covering her skin. What was her name? It started with an I. Indie, Irene, Imrah. Imrah! Imrah Mercado.
"Destiny? Hey Destiny!" Kai snapped his fingers in front of my face.
"Sorry, what?" I laugh trying to come off as relaxed and not as tense as I really was.
"You spaced out for a minute, did you hear anything I said?" He asked.
"Yeah, you were talking about Kira and how her mother was a shapeshifter." I nervously touch the gold chain hanging around my neck.
Kai noticing this asked "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." I nod my head and drop my hand from the chain. Kai's hazel eyes searched mine. They were beautiful with little flecks of gold that glinted in the sunlight, almost appearing yellow.
Kai opened his mouth to say something when a loud groan comes from a sleeping form near the fire. And a woman with turquoise hair about Kai's height gets out and stretches, reaching her hands toward the sky.
Once finished she noticed us and walked over pulling her hair into a ponytail. She wore army pants, black combat boots caked with mud, and a grey t-shirt wrinkled from sleeping.
"Well I see Immortal girl is awake." She said when she reached us. She was quite beautiful actually, with flawless tan skin, and chocolate colored eyes. Her hair stood out like a beacon of neon color.
"Kira." I mumble out rolling my eyes. She still looked the same except last time she had brown hair.
"Do I know you Immortal girl?" She asked crossing her arms with her hip jutted out.
"Don't you remember me? Your brainwashed Crow buddy who you said you would help get out but left in that hell hole?" I replied back staring into her brown eyes.
A flash of memories and realization passed over Kira's eyes as they widened. Her arms dropped to her sides, and her mouth opened slightly with disbelief.
"Katie?" She breathed.
