John Laurens walked in front of his two friends, carrying a terrarium in his arms. His turtle, Ball, sat inside the near-empty terrarium. Behind him, John could hear the high-school sweethearts laughing and joking around. He turned his head, looking at Hercules Mulligan and Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, or just Lafayette.

John asked Hercules to hold the terrarium as he began to unlock the dorm door. When the door opened, the three friends' jaws dropped. It was a mess. Papers scattered across the desk, boxes that were half-unpacked, books stacked messily by the first bed, holding up a walking cane. A man sat at the desk, typing vigorously on his laptop. He hadn't seemed to notice the three.

"Uh, hello?" John spoke up and the man's typing suddenly stopped. The man spun in his seat, looking at the three.

"Hello," the man said before spinning in his seat to grab his walking cane. He got up and limped towards John and his friends.

"Uh, I'm John Laurens," John said as the man stopped in front of him, leaning on the cane.

The man held out his hand.

"Alexander Hamilton."

The two shook hands and 'Alexander' limped back to the desk with his cane, leaning it back up against the wall after sitting and getting back to typing.

"Well, uh, John, we should get to our dorm," Hercules said and John turned to his friends.

"Right, of course. Thanks for holding Ball, Herc," John said, taking the terrarium from Hercules's arms.

After setting up his side of the dorm, John sat on his bed, staring at his strange new roommate. His roommate was still typing away, like he was running out of time.

"So, Alexander, what'cha typing over there?" John asked, breaking the silence between them.

"Something," Alexander responded, not stopping nor looking up.

"M'kay," John said, the air around them suddenly turning awkward; at least it was awkward for him.

"Uh, Alexander, I'm gonna go hang out with my friends," John said after a while, standing up and reaching for his notepad. He scribbled his phone number on it and set it down on the desk. "Here's my number if you need anything."

Alexander mumbled a thank you and John left, his mind swimming with thoughts.
