'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

- 'Twas the night before Christmas (Clement Clarke Moore)

A whiff of cold December air followed Olivia into the warm halls of Truncheon books. Winter in the city, she thought, was really not what the Christmas movies made it out to be. It was a chaotic buzz of people trying to get their shopping done in time while getting more and more aggravated with every passing moment. And to top that all off, the white wonderland the big screen had been promising, was merely a grey goo on the side of the road.

Getting their usually coffee order from the coffee shop two blocks down had taken her almost an hour and this time she hadn't even gotten tangled in a conversation with the barista about foam art and cocoa powder stencils.

As soon as the styrofoam cup holder touched the surface of the front desk, doors to her left and right swung open. If there was one surefire way to get the Truncheon-Boys' attention, it was bringing coffee.

" Finally, what took you so long ?"

Olivia's eyes snapped up towards Matthew in his signature blue sweater west, teasing smirk on his lips. She knew it wasn't said with malice or even annoyance but something about it rubbed her the absolute wrong way. Today wasn't a good day in all accords. From every angle and every view, today sucked.

" You know what, Matthew? How about you go get the coffee next time, huh? Or maybe you can finally get a new coffee machine, how about that? Instead of sending me out into literal hell to deal with a bunch of angry middle-aged women in a pre-Christmas shopping rush. Huh? How does that sound to you? "

" Uh — "

" Yeah, thought so."

She knew it wasn't fair the, to let her anger and frustration out on Matthew. Yeah, he was an idiot but he was part of her bunch of idiots. Her — chaotic little family. But today was just too much and even Olivia had her breaking points. She knew once she'd calmed down she'd apologize, hug him and maybe bribe his forgiveness with some pizza and they'd be fine again.

But right now, she just needed to get away. So she grabbed her bag and rushed up the stairs towards her apartment.

" Yikes. Jess, seems like your girlfriend is on her period or something. "

Matthews joke was met with a harmony of groans from both Jess and Chris who had come to pick up their order of coffee and had witnessed the entire exchange.

" You are such an asshole, Matt. " Chris replied, slapping him on the back of the head.

Jess shook his head in a disapproving manner, before taking a sip of his coffee and following Olivia up the stairs.

" She's not my girlfriend by the way!" his voice echoed through the hallway right before he disappeared upstairs.

" Oh, she totally is. "

" Yeah, " Chris agreed " which makes you even more of an idiot."

" What? Why? What did I do? "

Olivia leaned against the window frame, looking out at the softly falling snow. If only life was this peaceful and soft. Flakes falling slowly like feathers sailing through the air. But that wasn't what life felt like at the moment. Life was blizzards and flurries of snow. Chaotic and disoriented.
