Jack's POV
John and I watched as another kid got adopted.
We would never find a family, we were getting too old.
I sighed and walked to the shared bedroom, sitting on my bed. John sat down by me, then leaned back so he was laying down.
"Do you ever think we will be adopted?" He asked and I shook my head.
"No, I honestly have given up all hope of that" I said and he looked sad.
I wished we had a family.
My family had disowned me when they learned I was possessed. A red mark under my eye.
Sometimes it would cause great pain, but I always tried to hide it. I didn't want John to leave me too. He was my best friend.
If he ever knew I was possessed, I was sure he wouldn't want to be my friend. After all, when my parents found out, they left me. How could I expect him to stay?
I laid down on my back and stared at the ceiling. There were weird brown stains on the ceiling which intrigued me. I was a curious person, and anything I didn't know I obsessed over.
John pointed at the stains.
"What do you think those are from?" He asked and I shrugged.
"I dunno" I said and He laughed at how serious I sounded, nudging me.
"C'mon, it's not that bad here" he said and I smiled.
"I guess"
He sat up and pulled my pillow from where it laid at the head of the bed and hit me with it. I sat up and sputtered.
"H-hey!"
He laughed and tossed me the other one.
"Come on, I'm bored!"
I caught it and smiled as eviliy as I could.
"You're in trouble now" I said and hit him over the head with it.
He smiled widely and hit me back, and before I knew it we were battling with pillows.
I never smiled unless I was with John. Ever. In all my 14 years of life, he was the only person who had ever caused me to smile.
He was a year and a half younger than me, and had always felt like a little brother. Someone to protect.
Eventually I was breathless and struggled to breathe.
"Stop! I cant, I can't breathe!" I wheezed, and he laughed breathlessly as well.
"S-same"
We set the pillows down and laid back down.
When we could breathe again I asked "So, who won?"
John shrugged. "I dunno if there is a winner"
"Yeah..."
"But there is a loser" he said, looking at me with a evil smile on his face.
"Yeah, you" I said and he sat up, slapping my arm playfully.
"No, you" he said.
"But if there isn't a winner, how can there be a loser?" I asked, slapping him back.
He slapped me again. "There just is"
"Well, I'm still not the loser"
"Yes you are" he slapped me again.
"Hey! I didn't slap you but once, you've slapped me three times!"
He slapped me again. "Whatchu gonna do about it?"
"This" I said, pulling the blanket over me and laying down on the bed.
He just sat on me.
"Hey, thanks for the seat" he mumbled and I tried to sit up but he was to heavy.
"Okay okay, get off!" I yelled and he obeyed, I sat up and inhaled a deep breath.
The care taker came into the room and told us it was time for dinner. We went down to the dinning hall where all the other kids were.
Dinner was broth and bread, as always.
After dinner was bedtime. The halls were filled with children fighting to reach the bedrooms first and shouting. Me and John waited till the dinning hall was empty before we got up.
We got ourselves ready then laid down.
Our beds were next to each other, thankfully.
We talked quietly for awhile before falling asleep.
