Should I talk to him?
He's just standing there.
His back is to you, and he's still wearing his volleyball jersey. A number 12 is printed in white.
You've always been a fan of volleyball, especially your school's eccentric boys' team. They're amazing, but they've just lost against Aobajohsai High, and the famed Oikawa Tooru, which has no doubt done something to everyone's confidence.
You always come to the gym after games to meet your cousin, Kiyoko, who is the manager of the team, but today you couldn't find her anywhere, so you went ahead into the gym.
And saw him. The boy at the net.
He hasn't noticed you.
You're debating whether or not to say something, but then he reaches up, touching the volleyball net, reaching for the top. You can't see his face, so you have no idea what he's thinking.
He takes a deep breath, then exhales.
There's something enchanting about the way his fingers graze the net, and how the gym lights seem to perfectly light up the number on his back. Something makes you want to stay, to watch him.
You don't know who he is, but you know he must not get much spotlight at games. You look at your phone.
10:15 pm.
Should I just go home?
You don't want to leave him, for some strange reason.
As you're about to leave, he picks up a gym bag you hadn't noticed before.
As he's checking his phone, you sneak out the front, to Kiyoko waiting for you.
She asks you what you were doing, but you ignore her and bike home, heart pounding for no apparent reason.
You look back to see the lights in the gym turn off, and a silhouette exit the door. You smile.
The Boy at the Net.
And then, you see headlights, and you think you hear Kiyoko scream.
❤ ❤ ❤
It's been a week since you first saw him. The Boy at the Net, number 12.
Ever since they lost that match, he's stayed after practice at the gym.
Sometimes he practices serving, sometimes he just stands there. But he never sees you.
You can't help but wonder why.
For some reason, you feel drawn to this boy. This boy you don't even know, who's face you've never seen. Just the number on his back and his messy hair.
Call it creepy, but you think about him a lot, for whatever reason. It's strange.
It's like an invisible string is pulling you towards him, drawing you to him.
Or maybe you're just lonely.
You sigh and check your phone.
10:15 pm.
Like clockwork, he picks up his bag, checks his phone, and leaves.
Like every single day, he doesn't notice you.
And you wish that would change.
