I got up out of my bed. Yesterday was my first day starting my degree in nursing. My 19th birthday was two days ago. I was able to let my entire past go, but there was one simple connection holding me back. My boyfriend, Chance, needed to know that my feelings were gone. He was driving here today to talk to me. I was a nervous wreck. The news was going to break his heart. I was the responsible one for his heart breaking too. The weather was rainy and cold. I pulled my black hoodie over my head and hopped, literally, into my favorite skinny jeans. I then pulled on my black vans.
My roommate was asleep in her bedroom. The cost of living on campus was too expensive, so we rented an apartment. I met Alyssa and we agreed to rent. Everything was going good with her. I knew I could entirely trust her.
I grabbed my keys and left Alyssa a note on the table before heading out. Chance was meeting me at the coffee shop I was currently working at. The drive was only ten minutes. I pulled up and parked my car, getting out. The bell chimed when I walked in. Chance wasn't here yet. I ordered a black coffee and sat down at a table in the corner. I drifted off in my thoughts, when sudden snapping occurred in my face. I looked up, but the tall figure wasn't Chance. He had been 30 minutes late. Where was he?
"Hey, you look like you could use some company." I smiled slightly at the boy standing there.
"Uh..sure. I'm Lauren." I held my hand out to him.
"I'm River. Nice to meet you." He sat down across from me. I glanced behind him to see a table of three kids staring at us. I smirked.
"Let me guess, you need my number because of a dare?" I pointed to the kids behind us. He hung his head in shame. "Well, here. Now you can say you've won, River." I handed him a napkin with my number.
"Oh..thank you." His voice was deep. He had dark brown hair with eyes that matched. He was wearing a leather jacket, a white shirt, and jeans. His look was finished with black vans. He looked familiar. Where had I seen him before? When he got up, Alyssa walked in. She smiled at me. She got her coffee and came to my table.
"Did you talk to Chance yet? What did River want?" I sighed due to her first question.
"Chance stood me up. I'm not sure if he forgot, or meant to do it. Also, you know him? He wanted my number." Her eyes widened.
"The baddest, hottest guy in our entire school asked for your number? That's exciting." I laughed nervously.
"It was only a dare, and I gave him my number so he didn't lose." Alyssa aimlessly laughed at me.
"Be careful with him. I'll help you if you need it." I scoffed.
"He won't even message me. I'm not his type." I checked the time. My class was starting in 15 minutes. "I've gotta go. Class starts soon." I got up and left Alyssa sitting there alone. I got in my car and sped to class. I barely made it on time. I walked in and took my seat right as the bell rang. The class seemed to just drag on. I looked up and saw River sitting in front of me. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Please don't turn around. I looked down and took more notes. When I looked up again, my eyes instantly locked with his.
