It was almost five o'clock. My last two clients had canceled on me. I made my last few calls and signed some paperwork.
I was in a rush because I was having supper with my boyfriend Jason Myers Harrison.
Jason was a banker at the National Bank on Main Street.
We have been dating for four years. I am forty-two and I want to get married.
I wanted babies and a big nice house. I worked hard and I deserve it. I was the only girl and the only college graduate in the family. My mother and father are proud of that.  Not of my brother though.
You see my younger brother, Troy is in prison for armed robbery. He and a couple of his homies thought that they can pull a heist on an armored Wells Fargo truck.
Drunk ass Niggas  thought they were on the Dead Presidents or something.
Bouncy and JuneBug, his crew got shot by the police. Now they handicap and serving time. Troy always calling collect asking for money and care boxes.
I work hard and now I am a owner of a Real Estate Company well co-owner anyway.
My business partners Kenny and Leigh Ericsson are somewhere on the other side of the world.
They trust me to run this. And I have been running things smoothly.
I hurried to my duplex to prepare for the night.
My cellphone went off just as I got out of the shower.
"What up, Gurl?" greeted my girl Misha.  I sighed. " Getting ready to met Jason at the restaurant. He said he has a surprise." I told her.
"Ummm...you about to get that ring..." she replied. I laughed.
I stood in my closet to find something to wear.
"I don't know...maybe." I pulled out the wine pantsuit but decided against it.
"Girl....you been together for almost three years now. He acts like he adores you." I pulled out my the little black number that makes me look sexy.
"Yeah...I adore him too. But before I get all excited, Mish... I want to see what he's talking about."
So, now after four glasses of wine and leg of lamb, I sat looking into Jason's grinning face.
"So how is work going." I asked. He holds his glass of wine and spins the wine around in the glass.
"I approved some loans today as usual. Connie, can we talk about us?" He asked.
Jason wasn't the handsomest man but he was smart and had a good heart.
"I been thinking about it a longtime and I think that we should...well...merge 401ks."He said.
I gave him this look. He grinned and got up from the table and came by my side. The people seem to stop and stare. On one knee he asked, "Connie, would you marry me?" He offered me the prettiest ring in a satin box.
Maybe it was the alcohol. I said, "Yes!" He grinned from ear to ear and exclaimed, "The lady said yes." Everyone clapped. So to give them what did want Jason and I passionately kissed.
And now after a couple more glasses of wine and some sex, I am staring at my ceiling. Jason is snoring and sweating all over me.
Wasn't I supposed to be happy?
So I do what a woman that has no other prospects do I settle.
I got with my girlfriends. They all happy for me.
"Girl....I am gonna throw you a bachelorette party..." cried Misha.
"I know this chick named Anaisha...she does passion parties!" cried Erica.
My other girl Regina cried, "Yes...and let's get some strippers!"
" I know some strippers!" exclaimed Janice. " A friend of mine can hook us up."
"It can be a passion party with strippers. Come on girl, you and Jason gonna be getting down on y'all honeymoon...." said Janice.
"I haven't pick a Church or a dress y'all..."I cried.
Misha stood up. " Call me your official wedding planner..." she declared.
"And Holly knows the right shops to find the perfect wedding dress..." replied Erica.
"Oh...hell naw...we have to deal with Snow Bunny..." exclaimed Janice.
Holly is Erica's girlfriend or partner. Janice doesn't like her because she thinks she is fake or maybe its homophobia.
"Oh come on Janice..." cried Erica. Misha got between them. I have an homegirl that owns a dress boutique over in Ratner." Misha hugged me again and declared, " We gonna hook you up!"
"And my girl Anaisha have the sexy panties for you, too. said Erica. She made a face at Janice.
Janice poked out her tongue.
"Well...I got the stripper mens!"
Jason and I dropped by my parents home for dinner.
He spoke to my father alone. I told my mother and showed her the ring.
Mom was ecstatic. " Pastor Fields would love to marry you two." She cried. Dad was somber but I frowned. I did not like Pastor Fields. He gave me shady vibes.
"I know a good friend of mine...he's a justice of the peace..."replied my Dad.
Ma object. "I think Constance need to marry in the church...where her marriage can be blessed by God...."
Jason said he really didn't have a particular religion and that he would like to marry at one of our parks.
My dad didn't seem thrilled but he agreed.
"It beats paying Filthy Fields a bunch of money. That's your blessing from God." Ma was adamant.
"Fields is shifty as they come and I don't want to be involved with him or that church he got."With that Dad left us in the living room.
Ma was in happy babble mode.
"Are you sure he's the man for you, Connie?"Dad asked when I sneaked to the den to join him later.
I was sure. I think.
I told him about Jason's great job. His yacht and his big house in the upscale part of town.
Dad shook his head. "All the money in the world doesn't make for a person's character."
