Waking up was a total nightmare wanting only to fall back asleep. Yet, everyone had gone and left the room already with the sunlight reflecting in, warming the small, rectangular room. That means I was the last to wake up.

My eyes burned while adjusting to the bright light in the small room seeing Courtney sitting on the edge of my bed with her fingers combing through my hair putting me immediately at ease. A soft gentle moan escaped my lips, humming from the most perfect sensation.

"Oh good, you're awake." Courtney's voice spoke softly beside me. She shifted closer to me, the warmth of her surrounding me as my body curled around her. "I thought you'd never wake up because it's unusual for you —waking up so late. Also, you talk in your sleep. Most of it was French so I couldn't understand but I think it had something to do with soup."

I was too exhausted to respond. Instead, I answered by letting out a low, sleepy hum. Stirring slightly in the bed, her thigh pressed against my knee while I attempted to stretch. My whole body was hurting from the lack of energy and sleep.

"You need to get up. You'll miss breakfast." Courtney said as her hand started to play with my curls again instantly relaxing me making me want to fall back asleep.

Doesn't she know that's only going to do the opposite for me? My hair being played with was a secret weakness of mine. Of course it would make me succumb under her touch melting from the feeling of her fingers running through my curls.

Food sounded so good. A nice, warm cup of tea with pancakes glazed with butter and syrup. My mouth watered. It was a shame the only food we were offered was completely morbid. And being practically family with Chef, of course he wouldn't let me suffer like the rest of them. He let me have fruit. At least, sometimes...

"Mmm but at what cost?" I whined as my body relaxed to her combing through my hair. Courtney chuckled, sleeplessness under her breath as she sat comfortably next to me.

"She speaks. Guess you're not dead after all." She said before getting to her feet from her bunk. "Get dressed and hurry to the mess hall."

I sadly groaned wishing she didn't stop. It was so nice, yet it only lasted for a moment. It gave me the needed push to get up since there was nothing keeping me from my sleeping position. Lifting the sheets off of me, my body found it absolutely dreadful to have to function. My body caught against me wanting to do nothing but remain motionless.

My bare feet slid against the floor scuffling as I made it to the dresser to pull out my clothes. Katie's hand held mirror was open on the dresser as it reflected my disgusting face. My curls were tangled and wild, and my once beautiful complexion was tainted with dark, heavy bags under my puffy red eyes. The exhaustion was still pure in its form expressing it well to my misfortune. There was nothing to be done.

"You look awful." Courtney said nearby with a small chortle. My attention flicked to her, seeing her leaning at the door staring the entire time. Her eyes fixated closer to my body, taking notice of my skin. "Did those hurt?"

Her gaze was stuck on one of the large scars that ran across my back. My shoulders shrugged staring straight ahead into the mirror only to see her attention on me still from behind thanks to the reflection of the glass.

"That one, not really." I answered simply before turning to face her to raising my top a little to reveal my sports bra to show the scars that aligned just beneath. "This one was a killer. Nearly had all my insides out of my body. Don't ask why... I'm not allowed to tell."

Her lips pierced tightly together as her eyes ran across my body inspecting each and every scar and mark on my being. She sharply pointed a finger down across the back of my thigh running up to my knee.
