Scarlett's POV

"You knew. You knew and you didn't even warn me about it," I tell her trying to keep my calm.

I still haven't gotten over the fact that he is back. I can't get rid of the weird hollowness at the pit of my stomach since I saw him at the party.

"I wanted to tell you, Scar, but I also know how much even taking his name affects you," she explains to me with her head still hanging down. Emily hadn't looked me in the eye from the moment we entered the ladies room.

"Emily, I would rather hear his fucking name than see his face," I uttered through gritted teeth. I rub my hands over my face, not bothering to be careful of ruining my make-up. Giving my hair a firm tug, I turn around to face the mirror. I take in my appearance through tired eyes. There was still a tiny bit of mascara smudged on my cheek. Wetting a paper towel, I carefully wipe it away, glancing at Emily through the mirror.

"Look," she starts, her head facing upwards, then back down, her eyes meeting mine in the mirror. "I cannot exactly tell you why I was meeting him but I can tell you that nothing is going on between us."

I scoff turning around to face her. "You have got to be kidding me. What is it that is so important than your best friend's safety?"

She takes in a sharp breath, "Scarlett, you are literally like a sister to me. I have seen you at your worst, I have seen you go through shit because of him. It broke my heart seeing you like that. I would never do anything that would put you in a situation like that, ever. Just trust me."

I blankly stare into her eyes. The insecurity in my head tries to find any hint of a lie in them but fail to. Instantly feeling ashamed of accusing her, I go ahead and hug her tight. Right then, the door opens revealing Blakeley and Delancy.

"Are you okay, Scar? Elijah told us what happened," Delancy asks politely. I nodded giving her a small smile and direct my eyes to Blakeley who was twiddling her fingers. A habit of hers whenever she was nervous.

"You knew didn't you?"

She looks at me adjusting her purse strap on her shoulder. "Yes," she says slowly. "Emily told me to cover up for her."

I huff out trying not to overthink everything.

"You know what, it's alright, I am alright," I tell them putting on a smile.

"You sure?" Lance asks, caressing my arm. I nod keeping the smile.

"Okay then, let's go back to the party, mum will be giving her speech in a few minutes," Blakeley says.

"You guys go ahead, I'll fix my make up and join you soon."

Emily lingers a bit, looking at my face, proceeding to leave the room. I turn round on my heel and go towards the mirror. Setting down my purse, I grip the sink and look back at me through the mirror.
